PHOENIX, AZ - Western Washington University was shut out for the ninth time this season as it fell 2-0 to Grand Canyon University in a non-conference men's soccer game Sunday at the GCU Soccer Complex.
The Vikings, who have scored only 15 goals in 18 games this season, fell to 2-15-1.
Grand Canyon, which won its fifth straight game, improved to 8-7-2. The Antelopes broke a scoreless tie in the 57th minute when Daniel Sabillon scored on a penalty kick. They got an insurance goal in the 64th minute as Stephan Clayton found the net, Ugljesa Vrbica getting the assist.
"It was pretty much of a midfield struggle," said Western coach Travis Connell, "Then we gave up the penalty kick which really gave them a lot of momentum."
Western had a 6-5 edge in shots.
Connell praised the play of goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Sr., Monroe) and midfielder Filomon Afenegus (Sr., Spokane/North Central).
"Ben (Dragavon) played one of his better games and was very sure handed on crosses," Connell said, "and Filomon (Afenegus) played well in the midfield controlling the tempo of the game."
The Vikings return to Great Northwest Athletic Conference action Saturday (3 p.m.) at Humboldt State University.
