Western drops 8-0 decision to No.8 Humboldt State

RICHLAND, Wash. - Western Washington University lost 8-0 to nationally ranked Humboldt State University to open final-day play Sunday at the 10th annual Central Washington Invitational Softball Tournament. The game ended after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.

The Vikings, who fell to 2-5, managed just two hits off Humboldt State pitcher Tracy Motzny (10-1), who had nine strikeouts. Ashley Barber (Jr., Camas) singled in the top of the third inning and Adrienne Moore (Sr., Lake Forest Park/Shorecrest) had an infield hit in the fourth inning.

Humboldt State, ranked No.8 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Poll, improved to 21-1. The Lumberjacks are 8-0 in the tournament, clinching the championship Saturday as every other team had at least two losses.

Meribeth Wareham had two hits and drove in three runs for Humboldt State, starting things off with a two-run single in the first. She also had a run-scoring single in the third.

Amy Rothballer and Brandi Harrison each had three hits for the Lumberjacks, Rothballer scoring three runs and Harrison two. Also having two hits was Nancy Harbeson, who ended the game with a two-out single that scored Carolyn Cameron.

Western closes out the tourney with a 1 p.m. game against Grand Canyon University.
