SEATTLE, Wash. - Jessica Telleria (Jr., Boise, ID/Capital) won the women's discus and Mark Mellein (Jr., Maple Grove, MN/South Puget Sound CC) placed second in the men's triple jump with a personal best, highlighting Western Washington University performances at the Seattle Pacific University Ken Foreman Invitational Track and Field Meet on Saturday at Husky Stadium.
The meet was the last opportunity for athletes to reach provisional or automatic qualifying standards or better their provisional efforts in order to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 26-28 at Abilene, Texas.
Telleria took the discus with a mark of 150-11, well short of her school-record 151-10, which ranks 11th nationally.
Mellein had a personal best of 46-9 as he placed second in the triple jump. That was still a foot short of the provisional qualifying standard.
Also finishing second for Western were Kyle McGillen (Fr., Clinton/South Whidbey), who went 22-8 1/2 in the men's long jump, and Andrea Kreft (So., Lake Stevens), who reached 11-7 3/4 in the women's pole vault, just 1/4-inch shy of her provisional mark.
The Vikings' Scott Romney (Jr., Gig Harbor) came up less than two inches short of the provisional mark in the men's pole vault as he placed third at 15-7 1/4. He had three good attempts at 16-0.
National meet participants will be announced Tuesday.
