Vikings blanked 3-0 by No.9 Seattle Pacific

Sept. 28, 2005

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash. - Western Washington University was shut out for the second straight game and suffered its fourth consecutive loss Wednesday, falling 3-0 to nationally ranked Seattle Pacific University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game at Interbay Stadium.

The Vikings dropped to 1-10-1 overall, the worst start in school history, and 0-3-0 in GNAC play. They have not scored against the Falcons in the last four series meetings.

Seattle Pacific, ranked No.9 in the latest NSCAA/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, improved to 8-1-3 overall and 1-0-1 in league action. The Falcons are unbeaten in their last eight games at Interbay Stadium and have not allowed a goal in the last six.

"They are a very good team and they really wore us down," said Western coach Travis Connell. "We did have our moments. Mirza Memic (Fr., Bellevue/Newport) was really dangerous and probably played one of his best games. He had numerous chances, including a couple of open shots in the box in the first half and a couple of headers in the second half. And Blake Brown (Jr., West Linn, OR) played the second half at sweeper and really organized us and helped shut down their attack. But they really had the better of us in the first half."

The Falcons got on the board in the eighth minute, Andy Willis scoring his eighth goal of the season, drilling an 18-yard shot into the right corner. Credited with an assist was James Coggan.

After Western's Robbie Curry (Jr., Mount Vernon) skimmed the crossbar with a free kick in the 33rd minute, Seattle Pacific's Ross Vaillancourt collected a clearance at the top of the box and ripped a low drive inside the left post in the 42nd minute for a 2-0 lead. The only goal of the second half came on a penalty kick by Jeff Hallenbeck in the 55th minute, after he had been taken down in front of the Western goal.

Seattle Pacific had a 24-12 advantage in shots, with Western having an8-6 edge in corner kicks. Western goalkeeper Ben Dragavon (Sr., Monroe) had five saves and Seattle Pacific six.

Dragavon entered the game ranked No.15 nationally in saves per game.

Western hosts Pacific Lutheran University on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference contest at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
