CHICO, Calif. - Western Washington University's scoring woes continued as it fell 7-0 to Chico State University in the opener of a non-league softball doubleheader Thursday at University Field.
It was the fifth time in six doubleheaders this season that the Vikings, who fell to 6-13, have been blanked in the first game.
Western has lost three straight and has dropped six of its last seven games. During that stretch, the Vikings have scored just seven runs.
Chico State, which improved to 8-9, won its third straight game and for the fifth time in six contests after a 3-8 start.
Western managed just five hits off Wildcat pitcher Kristin Paese (4-4), who struck out 10 and walked three.
Chico State's Jenny Chacon, who had two hits, twice scored on wild pitches, once in the bottom of the second inning for the Wildcats' first run, and again in the fifth. She also brought in a run by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
Angela Vandeburgh also had two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth; and Nickie Jarrett drove in two runs with sacrifice flies in the fifth and sixth.
Western's Misty Britt (Jr., Kelso/Lower Columbia CC) had three hits and a stolen base. Amanda Shiflet (Fr., Stanwood) and Ashley Barber (Sr., Camas) had the Vikings' other two hits.
Nicole Walker (Jr., Kenmore/Juanita) (2-6) pitched into the fifth inning before being relieved by Ashley Osman (Jr., Federal Way/Jefferson).
Western is currently 1-4 on its eight-game road trip to northern California
