April 14, 2006

Box Score

NAMPA, Id. - Western Washington University pitcher Jackie Quint (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) broke the school season record for strikeouts as the Vikings split a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene University, winning the opener 7-1 and losing the nightcap 2-1, on Friday at Halle Field.

The Vikings are now 14-20 overall and 4-6 in league play, winning seven of their last 11 games. Northwest Nazarene is 14-14 overall and 3-5 in GNAC action.

Quint evened her record at 10-10 and struck out six with a complete-game victory in the opener. She also pitched two innings in the nightcap, striking out two. That upped her season strikeout total to 131, breaking the record of 129 set by Amanda Grant in 2003.

In the first game, Quint allowed just three singles and walked two, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters she faced.

Amanda Shiflet (Fr., Stanwood), who was 2-for-3, drove in four runs for the Vikings, putting them ahead for good, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning. She also had a two-run single in Western's four-run sixth and a RBI-single in the seventh.

Nicole Walker (Jr., Kenmore/Juanita) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first, and Ashley Osman (Jr., Federal Way/Jefferson) had a two-run double in the sixth.

Western's Ashley Barber (Sr., Camas) had two hits as did Mandy Harvey (Sr., Coeur d'Alene, ID/Lake City).

Northwest Nazarene scored its only run in the bottom of the first, Trisha DeSimone (6-6) getting the loss for the Crusaders.

In the second contest, the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Devin Dykstra (So., Sumas/Nooksack Valley) doubled and scored on double by Barber, who extended her hitting streak to nine games.

Northwest Nazarene scored its two runs in the bottom of the third when DeSimone and Adrian Herman had back-to-back RBI singles.

Herman (7-5) got the win for the Crusaders, giving up five hits, striking out six and not issuing a walk.

Osman (1-3) took the loss for Western, working the first four-plus innings. Quint relieved her after a leadoff double by Ashley Carlton in the fifth, and broke the record by fanning Liz Smith.

Dykstra had two hits for the Vikings.
