BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Thirteen Western Washington University athletes -seven men and six women - have been named to the 2006 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Academic all-star team announced today.
Senior Scott Romney (Gig Harbor) was one of four GNAC athletes named for the fourth time. He has a 3.42 grade point average (4.0 scale) in computer science.
Four other Viking seniors were repeat selections. Paul Danforth (Kent/Kennedy), who has a 3.85 GPA in English literature; David Rogiers (Tacoma/Washington), who has a 3.68 GPA in accounting; and Jessica Telleria (Boise, ID/Capital), who has a 3.78 GPA in biochemistry; were named for the third year. Hunter Verner (Brentwood, TN/Montgomery Bell Academy), who is maintaining a 3.32 GPA in French, was picked for the second time.
The Western men led the conference with seven selections to the academic team. Also named were senior Mike Khabibulin (Vancouver, WA/Skyview), who has a 3.22 GPA in business administration and operations management; sophomore Keith Lemay (Blaine/Lynden Christian), who has a 3.68 GPA in physical education; and senior Tyler Thornbrue (Shelton), who has a 3.24 GPA in industrial technology.
Completing the Vikings named to the women's team were senior Erin Deasy (Gig Harbor), who has a 3.41 GPA in community health; senior Kirsten Holt (Lakewood), who has a 3.26 GPA in anthropology-archaeology; senior Katrina Schwerdtfeger (Mountlake Terrace), who has a 3.40 GPA in health and fitness; sophomore Julie Stone (Bellingham/Sehome), who has a 3.74 GPA in environmental science; and senior Ashley Van Oeveren (Fall City/Mount Si), who has a 3.30 GPA in psychology.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university. They also must qualify to compete in either the GNAC Indoor or GNAC Outdoor track-and-field championship meets.

110 Named To GNAC Academic Track-and-Field Team
SPOKANE - A total of 110 student-athletes - 72 women and 38 men - have been named to the 2006 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Academic all-conference team.
Five of the academic all-stars have perfect 4.00 grade point averages - Tim Keller and Amanda Merrell of Northwest Nazarene, Lindy Mullen and Marcie Mullen of Central Washington and Katelynn Blume of Saint Martin's
Western Washington placed the most athletes on the men's academic team with seven. Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Northwest Nazarene have six each. Seattle Pacific led the way on the women's team with 19 academic all-stars led by Central Washington with 14 and Northwest Nazarene with 10.
Four athletes were named to the team for the fourth time - Andy Prentice of Saint Martin's, Scott Romney of Western Washington, Lindy Mullen of Central Washington and Rebekah Bowman of Northwest Nazarene. Seventeen others were selected for the third time.
