BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Brent Carbajal has been named Western Washington University's new Faculty Athletics Representative.
Carbajal, a full Professor of Spanish specializing in Latin American literature, is also the Chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, a position he has held the last seven years.
"Brent Carbajal brings to this position outstanding ability and we anticipate he will be a very effective Faculty Athletics Representative," said Western President Karen W. Morse.
Carbajal came to Western in 1997 after seven years at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas. He earned a master's degree and doctorate from the University of Washington after being an undergraduate at Lewis & Clark College (Ore.), where he was a four-year letter winner in track and field.
The Faculty Athletics Representative is appointed by the university President and reports to the President on academic and compliance matters in athletics. In particular, the FAR plays an important role in ensuring academic integrity, facilitating institutional control of intercollegiate athletics and enhancing the student-athlete experience.
Carbajal replaces Ron Riggins, who served in the post for 10 years.
