BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Gibson Bardsley (Fr., Fall City/Mount Si) added to his team-leading totals with two goals and an assist as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's University, 5-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, rated sixth in the West Region, improved to 12-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. It was their first win in four games (1-2-1) following an eight-game winning streak.
Saint Martin's fell to 3-16-0 overall and 0-8-0 in league action. The Saints, who have been outscored 67-11, snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 2-1 win at Northwest University on Oct. 23.
After Saint Martin's Chase Franklin scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute, Bardsley tied it at 1-1 47 seconds later, scoring from 10 yards out on an assist by Samir Vejo (Jr., Trebinje, Bosnia).
Western went in front for good in the 21st minute as Zach Bauling (Sr., Albuquerque, NM) drilled a shot from 25 yards, Bardsley receiving an assist.
In the 36th minute, Cody Hagler (Sr., Canby, OR) scored from eight yards on a cross from Oliver Wellman (Jr., Bellevue/Sammamish) to give the Vikings a 3-1 advantage at halftime.
Bardsley scored an unassisted goal in the 53rd minute, as did Matt Fishbaugher (R-Fr., Redmond) in the 90th minute.
Bardsley now has team highs of 11 goals and five assists.
The Vikings entertain Seattle Pacific University on Wednesday, Oct. 31 (7 p.m.) in a GNAC counter.
