Vikings travel to Augustana

Oct. 30, 2007

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -

UPCOMING GAME: Western Washington University Vikings (2-6, 1-5) vs. Augustana College Vikings (3-7, 1-6) in a North Central Conference contest on Sat., Oct. 27 (10 a.m. PT) at Howard Wood Field (10,000 cap., FieldTurf) in Sioux Falls, SD.

The Vikings must win their final two games to avoid a seven-loss season for the first time since 1986 (2-7).

Western is looking to snap its second three-game losing streak of the season, following a 35-7 homecoming loss to Western Oregon last Saturday.

Two weeks ago, the Vikings lost 24-7 to No.19 Central Washington in the fifth annual Battle in Seattle at Qwest Field before a crowd of 11,780 after they had dropped a 24-10 decision at South Dakota.

Western's only win in the last seven games was a last-minute 18-15 decision over St. Cloud State at home

The Vikings began the season with arguably the toughest opening three games of any NCAA Division II team in the country. They debuted with a 28-21 victory at NCAA I-FCS UC Davis, then fell 45-10 at No.8 Nebraska-Omaha, and in their home opener, and lost 63-42 to No.2-ranked North Dakota in the highest-scoring game in school and NCC history.

Western followed that with a 22-14 setback at Minnesota Duluth.

Augustana has lost six of its last seven games after falling 27-16 at No.17 Central Washington last week. The only win during that span was 44-18 at St. Cloud State with the other losses being to Minnesota State Mankato 26-16, No.6 Nebraska Omaha 36-23, No.2 North Dakota 37-0, Minnesota Duluth 34-7 and South Dakota 38-17.

The AC Vikings, who have lost all four of their home games this season, won two of their first three contests. They took road victories over Mary, 26-19, and Northern State, 37-16, while losing 20-19 at home to Concordia-St. Paul.

SERIES HISTORY: Second meeting. Western won 10-6 at Bellingham last season.

CIVIC STADIUM: Western is in its 46th year of playing home games at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. The Vikings have a 122-88-7 (.578) record at that facility which was built in 1961. Last year, Western finished 3-3 at home after having a 1-3 record at Civic Stadium in 2005, its first losing mark at home since 1990 (2-3). The Vikings are 1-2 at home this season.

VIKING REPORT: Western must win one of its last two games if it is to avoid its first eight-loss season since 1983 when the Vikings finished 1-9. The last time they had seven losses was in 1986 (2-7).

Offensively, Western has scored just 24 points in its last three outings and has tallied 20 or more points just twice this season. The Vikings have not scored in the first quarter in their last five contests.

Western is averaging just 17.0 points and 314.6 total yards per game, seventh in the NCC. The Vikings lead the league in net punting with a 35.3 average and are third in time of possession, averaging 32:21 minutes per game. They also have turned the ball over just 11 times and are plus-5 in turnover-takeaway ratio.

Directing the attack is junior quarterback Adam Perry, who has completed 133-of-250 passes (53.2 percent) for 1,548 yards with seven touchdowns and just four interceptions. In Western's season-opening victory at UC Davis, Perry threw for 362 yards, the seventh-highest total in school history, connecting on 31-of-46 attempts, including two for touchdowns. That earned him College Sports Report National Division II Football Performer of the Week and NCC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Sophomore running back Craig Garner, who missed the St. Cloud State game with a bruised knee, has run for 732 yards and six touchdowns on 184 carries (4.0 apc), ranking fourth in the NCC in rushing at 104.6 yards a game. He has run for 100 or more yards in eight of his last 11 games. Garner had a career-high 192 rushing yards against North Dakota, tying a school record with four touchdowns.

The receiving corps is led by junior Travis McKee with 39 catches for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Rick Copsey has caught 24 passes for 323 yards and one touchdown.

Western is allowing 31.1 points and 440.8 total yards per game, last in the NCC. They have had 16 takeaways, split evenly between fumble recoveries and pass interceptions.

Leading the stop unit is senior middle linebacker Shane Simmons, a 2007 second-team D2football.com preseason All-American and a second-team all-NCC pick last year. He tops the NCC in tackles and ranks fourth nationally with 102 (12.8 avg.) (30 more than closest league rival). Simmons forced a fumble in the dying seconds of the St. Cloud State game to preserve the victory.

Senior punter Corbin Anderson is averaging 37.1 yards on 45 boots, including a school-record effort of 79 yards against UC Davis when he was named NCC Special Teams POW.

AUGUSTANA REPORT: The Sioux Falls, S.D.-based Vikings, who are looking to avoid the NCC cellar, are playing their final game of the 2007 season.

Augustana's defense, which held Central Washington to a season-low 350 total yards, is led by senior cornerback Dustin Rice, who has tied one NCC record this season and broken another. Rice equaled the NCC single-season record for interceptions returned for touchdowns with three this fall and set a career mark with four thefts for scores in NCC play. Overall, Rice has returned seven interceptions for touchdowns, and has also scored on a blocked punt.

Junior outside linebacker Brandon McMichael has a team-leading 86 tackles (8.6 avg.), 9.5 for loss and 5.0 quarterback sacks for minus-41 yards. Senior end Nick Bentele has 7.5 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks, and senior end Chris Koopman has 10.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.

Together that trio has 27 of the team's 66 tackles for loss and 13.0 of the squad's 20 total sacks.

Junior free safety Brian Baumgartner has 80 tackles, one interception and two fumble recoveries. He was named NCC Player of the Week for his performance against Nebraska Omaha.

Overall, the Augustana defense is allowing 27.1 points and 375.8 total yards per game.

In its 44-18 win over St. Cloud State, the defense scored three touchdowns and the special teams forced two turnovers, blocked a punt and successfully converted and onside kick. The 26-point victory margin was Augustana's largest since 2000.

Junior quarterback Daniel Millus returned to action last week after missing the South Dakota game. He has made nine starts, throwing for 1,451 yards (135-of-238, 56.7 percent) and five touchdowns with 10 intercepted.

Filling in for Millus was redshirt freshman Tyler Schulte, who has been a wide receiver in every other game with 27 catches for 209 yards.

Senior Tommy Ellingworth leads the NCC with 62 receptions covering 716 yards with four touchdowns. Sophomore Joe Klumper has made 31 catches for 260 yards.

Junior Ryan Grossman has booted 6-of-11 field goals with a long of 44 yards, and senior Joe Nordin is averaging 37.0 yards on 51 punts with a long of 62. Twelve of his kicks have been inside the 20.

VIKING NOTES: Middle linebacker Shane Simmons, a second-team preseason D2Football.com All-America, is the first Viking to reach the century mark in tackles since Mark Spencer was credited with 126 in 1997. The school record of 164 was set in 1977 by Jim Sterk, now the director of athletics at Washington State ... Simmons has had double-figure tackles in 11 of the 13 games he has played the last two seasons with eight and nine stops in the other two. He had a career-high 18 stops versus Minnesota Duluth, earning NCC co-defensive Player of the Week honors. Last year, Simmons was leading NCAA II in solo tackles per game (9.8) until having his season end after five games because of a shoulder injury ... Western's four-game winning streak snapped by Nebraska-Omaha was the Vikings' longest since 2002 when they opened with four wins ... Western quarterback Adam Perry and punter Corbin Anderson were NCC co-offensive and co-special teams Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances in the Vikings' 28-21 win at NCAA Division I-FCS UC Davis on Sept. 1. Perry also was named the College Sports Report Division II Football Performer of the Week.

WWU INJURY REPORT: Wide receiver Casey Dell was lost for the season with a lacerated spleen injury suffered in the Central Washington game. Defensive end Nick Rocco also will miss the last two games as he is having surgery on his hand following an injury in the Western Oregon contest.

NCC PRESEASON POLL: Western was picked to finish ninth among nine teams in both the 2007 preseason North Central Conference coaches and media polls. Defending co-champion North Dakota was the first-place pick in both polls.

HEAD COACHES: Robin Ross (Washington State, 1977) is in his second year (7-12) as head coach at Western and has three decades of coaching experience. He was the defensive coordinator for two of the finest Viking teams in school history in the mid-1990s.

Ross has spent most of his career as an assistant at the NCAA Division I-A level. He also coached in the National Football League, being the linebackers coach with Oakland for two seasons, helping the Raiders have the ninth-ranked defense in the NFL in 2000, when they were 12-4 and reached the AFC Championship Game.

In 2005, Ross was linebackers coach at Oregon State University, where the Beavers led the PAC 10 in run defense, allowing 108.0 yards per game. He spent the previous four seasons as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at University of Oregon. The Ducks won the 2001 PAC 10 championship, finishing second in the ESPN Coaches Poll after defeating Colorado in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl. He was also at Oregon as an assistant during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Ross came to Western in 1994 and in his first season the Vikings led the NAIA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 11.5 points a game and five times holding opponents without a touchdown. Western, which posted its first national playoff victory that season with a 21-2 triumph at No.1-ranked Linfield, ranked third nationally in rushing defense at 76.0 yards a contest and fifth in total defense (260.3) with 42 takeaways (26 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries).

In 1995, Western finished 9-1, going 9-0 for the first undefeated regular-season for the school in 57 years and being ranked No.1 nationally in NAIA II for five weeks. The defense allowed 13.7 points a game, ranking seventh nationally in that category.

Immediately prior to coming to Western, Ross had been defensive coordinator at Iowa State University from 1987 to 1993. He has also been a defensive coordinator at Fresno State University (1996) and University of Cincinnati (1984 and 1985).

Ross, 53, began his coaching career at Long Beach State University in 1977. A graduate of Washington State University, where he also spent one season as a defensive line coach, Ross was a second-team all-PAC-8 pick as an offensive lineman. He was a 10th round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1976, and spent one preseason with the Seattle Seahawks.

Ross, who is the 13th head coach in the 96-year history of Western football, is a graduate of El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, Calif.

Brad Salem (Augustana, 1992) is in his third year (14-18) as head coach at Augustana. He had a 6-5 record in 2005, the second-best mark by a first-year coach in school history. Prior to that, Salem was the Vikings' offensive coordinator in 2004 and quarterbacks coach in 2003. Before returning to Augustana, he spent a decade coaching in the high school and college ranks, including a three-year stint as recruiting coordinator and passing coordinator for three seasons at South Dakota (1999-2001). He also was the offensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator at Luther College (1997-98) and was the offensive coordinator for one season (1993) with the Robinson Sphinx of the European Professional Football League. The 37-year-old Salem received his bachelor's degree at Augustana in 1992, playing quarterback and wide receiver for the Vikings. He also played at Northern Arizona.

LAST WEEK'S GAME: Quarterback Mark Thorson threw five touchdown passes, three in the second quarter, leading Western Oregon to a 35-7 victory over Western in a non-conference football game Saturday at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.

Western Oregon, which improved to 6-2, clinched its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1987.

Thorson, who took sole possession of Western Oregon's career touchdown pass mark with 52, completed 22-of-34 passes for 311 yards.

Western Oregon opened the scoring on first play of second quarter as Thorson threw a 17-yard pass to Isaiah Smith. That combination hooked up again on the next Wolves' possession for a 12-yard score. On the second touchdown catch, Smith tipped a pass from Thorson twice before finally grabbing the ball on the third try while lying across the goal line.

The Wolves extended the lead to 21-0 on their next possession, as Thorson capped a seven-play, 78-yard drive with a 29-yard touchdown to Shawn Kauleinamoku.

The Vikings reached the scoreboard late in the third quarter. Running back Craig Garner faked a halfback pass, then tucked the ball in and scampered through the Western Oregon defense for a 20-yard touchdown.

That briefly narrowed the margin to 21-7, but the Wolves put the game away early in the fourth quarter. Thorson hit Kauleinamoku for a 17-yard score in the first minute of the period, and less than five minutes later, connected with running back D.J. Jackson on a swing pass for an 8-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 35-7.

Western Oregon had a 397-293 advantage in total offense.

Western quarterback Adam Perry completed 14-of-33 passes for 148 yards, with wide receiver Travis McKee having seven catches for 56 yards.

Garner, who missed most of the first half with an injury, rushed for 124 yards on 25 carries, the eighth 100-yard performance in his last 11 games. He now has 732 yards this season and still has an outside chance of becoming the Vikings' first 1,000-yard rusher since 1996.

Western linebacker Shane Simmons, who entered the game ranked sixth nationally and tied for NCC lead in total tackles with 12.4 a game, had 15 stops.

Western Oregon linebacker J.T. Gilmore, who also entered the contest ranked among the top 10 nationally in tackles, led the Wolves with 10 stops. The Wolf defense had four quarterback sacks for minus-30 yards, two by tackle Matt Cox, and forced two turnovers.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING:

Nov. 4, 2006 at Bellingham, Wash. - Western 10, Augustana 6 - Perry throws winning TD pass with 7:35 to play

Quarterback Adam Perry threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Travis McKee with 7:35 to play, lifting Western to a 10-6 victory over Augustana in a North Central Conference game at Civic Stadium.

Western improved to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the NCC. The Vikings, who posted back-to-back wins for the first time this season, have trailed in the fourth quarter of all four of their victories.

Augustana fell to 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the NCC with its third consecutive loss.

Western's game-winning drive was set up when defensive end Ryan Conwell forced a fumble that was recovered by linebacker Brandon Elliott at the Augustana 35. Perry then threw a 21-yard completion to wide receiver Kellen Alley, and two plays later, found McKee in the back of end zone for the go-ahead score.

Augustana failed to cross midfield on its next two series, but a bad punt snap by Western gave Augustana the ball at the Western 46 with 16 seconds left. On second-and-10, quarterback Tommy Flyger connected with Ryan Rothenberger to the 27, and the clock stopped temporarily for the first down with one second left.

Flyger then threw to the end zone for Chris Pomerleau, but the pass fell incomplete.

The first three quarters of the game were played in a driving rain and a steady 25 m.p.h. wind from the southeast that sometimes gusted to nearly 40. The conditions made passing difficult, as the teams combined for just 141 yards through the air, 65 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter.

Perry, who entered the game early in the second quarter, was 7-of-10 for 70 yards, going 6-of-8 for 55 yards in the fourth quarter.

Augustana opened the scoring on its first possession of the game, moving 58 yards in 10 plays to set up a 23-yard field goal by Dan Grossman. The lead extended to 6-0 in the final minute of the first half as a botched punt snap by Western led to a 28-yard Grossman field goal.

Western reached the scoreboard midway in the third quarter, as its first completion of the day, a 15-yard pass from Perry to wide receiver Brett Upchurch, set up a 28-yard field goal by Robby Smith.

Augustana had a 246-191 advantage in total offense as fullback Jeremy Huber rushed for 130 yards on 24 carries. Flyger, a preseason Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-American, was 8-of-26 passing for 71 yards with two interceptions despite completing 4-of-6 for 33 yards on his opening drive of the game.

Western safety Todd McClellan had two interceptions for the second consecutive game, giving him five for the season. He led a defense that because of injuries played two safeties at outside linebacker and had tight end Tyler Birkley start at defensive tackle.

Running back Craig Garner paced the offense with 108 yards on 33 carries.

VIKINGS ARE FOOTBALL-ONLY MEMBER OF NCC: Western is a football-only member of the North Central Conference, one of the nation's most prestigious NCAA II alignments. The Vikings, along with arch-rival Central Washington, begin playing a full slate of eight NCC games last fall. The two schools had been competing as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The NCC, founded in 1921, currently has nine members in all, the others being Augustana SD, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State MN and South Dakota. This is the final year of the NCC, which placed three teams in the 2006 national playoffs, as two schools are leaving NCAA Division II for Division I-FCS after this season.

WWU FOOTBALL RETURNS TO GNAC IN 2008: Western will move to a new five-team football alignment as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference beginning in 2008. The Vikings, who already compete in the GNAC in five men's and seven women's sports, will return to the loop for football after a two-year absence. They won GNAC gridiron titles in 2001 and 2003.

Humboldt State, located in Arcata, Calif., and Dixie State in Saint George, Utah, will join Western and its fellow GNAC members Central Washington and Western Oregon in the GNAC football league. Humboldt State and Dixie State, currently members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the PacWest Conference, respectively, will be granted affiliate membership in the GNAC for football and the football conference will operate under the auspices of the GNAC. Neither the CCAA nor the PacWest sponsors football.

The new league will involve all five NCAA Division II schools in the West that sponsor football. The schools will play a home-and-home format, providing eight conference games each year.

Humboldt State, Central Washington, Western and Western Oregon previously competed in the GNAC in football between 2001 and 2005. The GNAC, however, dropped its sponsorship of football following the 2005 season when Central and Western elected to move their football programs to the NCC and Humboldt State left the GNAC to become a member of the CCAA.

Dixie State is currently in its second season as a NCAA Division II member.

NEXT GAME: The Vikings return home to host Minnesota State Mankato (4-5, 2-4) on Saturday, Nov. 10 (1 p.m.) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. The Mavericks host Central Washington on Saturday (12 noon CT).

WWU TEAM CAPTAINS FOR AUGUSTANA GAME: Tony Gardiner, Shane Simmons, Tyler Roberts, Junior Aumavae
