MONMOUTH, Ore. - Jackie Quint (Sr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) became the school's career innings pitched leader and got to within two in all-time strikeouts as Western Washington University defeated league-leading Western Oregon University, 5-2, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday at the WOU Softball Field.
The Vikings, who dropped the nightcap 6-0, are 16-16 overall and 1-3 in league action. Western Oregon is 18-17 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play.
Quint, who improved to 9-6 with the complete-game victory, now has worked 511 innings during her four-year career, breaking the mark of 507-2/3 set by Amanda Grant from 2000 to 2003.
Quint retired 19 of the last 20 batters she faced, including the last 15 straight. She allowed just three hits and one earned run, walked one and struck out nine. That upped her career strikeout total to 387, two shy of Grant's record in that category.
Western Washington scored twice in the top of the first inning on run-scoring singles by Liza Teichler (Jr., Sammamish/Skyline) and Katie Barker (So., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside).
Western Oregon tied the game at 2-2 with single runs in the first and third. Tyler Sutherland and Amanda Fleer had back-to-back doubles for the run in the first, and in the third Sutherland had an infield hit and scored all the way from first when a pickoff attempt went awry.
The Vikings went ahead for good with two runs in the fourth, Megan Fowler (Fr., Richland) driving in one with a bunt single and Misty Britt (Sr., Kelso) later scoring on a fielder's choice when a potential double-play ball was dropped by the second baseman.
Quint broke the career innings pitched record in style with back-to-back strikeouts in the fourth inning to tie and surpass the standard.
Western Washington scored one more run in the fifth when Ashley Osman (Sr., Federal Way/Jefferson) doubled and came home on a single by Hannah Becker (Fr., Robstown, TX/Calallen).
Becker and Meghan Flem (Fr., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) each had two hits for the Vikings. Brianne Dieringer (8-6) took the loss for Western Oregon, working 3-1/3 innings before being relieved by Ashley Sellers.
In the second game, Western Oregon scored three unearned runs in the first as the first eight Wolf batters reached base. Bonnie Trigero and Trina Dorn each had RBI singles as the Vikings committed three errors.
Trigero had a home run to lead off the fourth and Melissa Wilson drove in one run with a double and scored on an error as Western Oregon got two runs in the fifth.
Christina Cooke (8-10) pitched the shutout for the Wolves, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out one. She retired 12 in a row during one stretch from the second to the sixth.
Nicole Walker (Sr., Kenmore/Juanita) (3-7) pitched the first five innings for Western Washington with Sarah McEnroe (Fr., Woodinville) coming in for one inning of relief.
Barker, Teichler, Becker and Osman had the Vikings hits.
Western Washington and Western Oregon will play a non-conference twinbill Thursday (1 p.m.).
