BELLINGHAM, Wash. - An 11-game winning streak came to an end for Western Washington University as it fell 1-0 to Western Oregon University in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
The Vikings, whose record for consecutive victories is 13, fell to 33-20. It was the first time they had been shut out in 21 games and just the fourth time this season.
Western Oregon improved to 26-24.
The Wolves' Shannon Prochaska led off the top of the second inning with a towering home run over the left field fence and Ashley Sellers (3-1) made it stand up as she blanked the Vikings, giving up just three hits, striking out five and walking three.
Western Washington pitcher Sarah McEnroe (Fr., Woodinville) (12-3) scattered five hits in a complete-game effort. She struck out six and did not issue a walk. McEnroe had won her previous nine decisions, two short of the school record. Western Oregon had runners in scoring position in each of the last four innings, but McEnroe was able to work out of trouble each time.
The Vikings had runners on second and third with two outs in both the second and sixth innings, but could not get a run.
Katie Barker (So., Auburn/Auburn-Riverside) had a single in the third, extending her hitting streak to 10 games, matching Western Washington's best string this season.
