2006 RESULTS: Western finished 5-6 and tied for fifth place in the North Central Conference at 3-5. UC Davis, competing as an independent, finished fourth in the Great West Football Conference and is picked third in this year's preseason poll.

THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK: Western ended its 2006 campaign with three victories, defeating Western Oregon 17-14, Augustana SD 10-6 and Minnesota State, Mankato 35-21. It is the Vikings' longest victory string since 2002 when they opened with four wins. The school record for consecutive victories is nine, which was done twice, 1937-38 and 1995.

CLOSE CALLS: Four of Western's five victories last season were decided in the last eight minutes, two of them in the final 60 seconds.

VIKING REPORT: Western will look to an experienced defense as it seeks to post a winning season and push closer to the top of the rugged North Central Conference.

The Vikings, who were 5-6 last year and 3-5 in the NCC, have nine starters returning on defense, and 10 of the squad's 15 seniors are on the defensive side of the ball for second-year coach Robin Ross.

Western showed improvement over the course of last season, closing the year with three straight victories. That improvement figures to continue.

Anchoring the defense is a deep linebacker corps led by senior middle linebacker Shane Simmons, a 2007 preseason D2football.com All-America and second-team all-NCC pick who was leading NCAA Division II in solo tackles per game (9.8) until having his season end after five games because of a shoulder injury. He had 56 total tackles, 49 of them solo stops, including seven tackles for loss.

Simmons is one of eight returning linebacker letter winners. The other returning starters are seniors Taylor Wade and James Day, who both started the first nine games before having their seasons end with injuries. Wade, an NCC Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll selection, had 42 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Day had 28 stops.

Junior Steve Davis, who spent time at both safety and outside linebacker last year, had a team-high 69 stops and is a three-year starter. Ross is also high on senior Nick Warren, who made two starts last year and had an outstanding spring.

Leading the defensive line is senior end Ryan Conwell, a second-team all-NCC selection last season, when he had 36 tackles, including 12.5 tackles for loss, six of which were sacks. He also forced three fumbles and knocked down three passes.

On the other end is sophomore William Jackson, who played in all 11 games last year.

At tackle, Junior Aumavae, a junior, was an honorable mention all-NCC pick. A two-year starter, he had 16 tackles and knocked down two passes last year. Junior Shea Thorstad, who made one start last year, also returns, and redshirt freshman Don Thomas figures to see significant action.

The least experienced area of the defense is the secondary, although there are two returning starters in junior cornerbacks Maurice Jones and Anthony Rosso. Jones started all seven games he played, making 17 tackles. Rosso had 17 tackles in nine games, making five starts. Redshirt freshman Anthony Zackery also returns, having been granted a medical hardship after playing just two games, and sophomore C.J. Green had a solid spring.

At the safety positions, redshirt freshmen Allan Denton and Zach Schrader came out of spring ball as the starters. Also in the mix is sophomore Danny Cumming, a walk-on who started two games at the end of last season after injuries struck. Sophomore Noah Jiles should also contribute.

The offense is quite young, with just four seniors on that side of the ball. But six starters return, including the leading rusher and receiver.

Triggering the attack is junior quarterback Adam Perry. Perry played five games last season and was involved in four of Western's five wins. He completed 28-of-48 passes for 369 yards and four touchdowns, and also ran for 75 yards and a score on 16 carries. In his only start, he threw for 215 yards and directed the offense to a season-high 35 points in a victory over Minnesota State Mankato.

The main backup is junior Tony Gardiner, and there's also a long-term hope in true freshman Chris Bolt.

At running back, sophomore Craig Garner, a second-team all-NCC pick, rushed for 655 yards last season, and had four consecutive 100-yard rushing games after getting into the starting lineup midway through the season. He also added 13 receptions.

Sophomore Tyler Roberts, who was the leading rusher in spring ball, is the top backup.

When Western goes to a fullback, there are two solid options. Senior Tieba Bropleh moves over after lettering three years as a linebacker, and junior Matt Clark returns after having a season-ending injury in the second game last year.

At wide receiver, junior wide receiver Travis McKee had a team-high 32 receptions for 445 yards and three touchdowns last season. Senior Brett Upchurch had 30 receptions for 343 yards and one score, senior Casey Dell caught seven passes for 104 yards and one touchdown. and sophomore Rick Copsey is expected to see considerable action.

Junior tight end Logan Cullen had 11 receptions for 155 yards and one touchdown last year while making nine starts. Sophomore Steen Raisl returns after seeing extensive action in double tight-end sets, and sophomore Zach Hekker, a transfer from Weber State, will challenge for a starting berth.

There isn't a senior on the offensive line, but there are two returning starters in junior center Dan Trask and sophomore tackle Chris Miller. Junior guard Phil Hayes and junior tackle Chris Corey also saw extensive time in 2006, and junior Scott Allanson will be at the other guard.

Sophomore Ace Younggren was the regular placekicker in 2005 prior to redshirting last season. In 2005, he was 29-of-33 on extra points and 1-of-4 on field goals. Senior Corbin Anderson returns for his third year as the punter. He averaged 35.7 yards a kick last year, and his excellent hang time led to a dramatic improvement in punt coverage.

On returns, Garner averaged 24.1 yards on 25 kickoff returns, and Dell will return punts. Copsey also is expected to be a major special teams contributor on coverage.

Western is also a threat in blocking kicks. The Vikings blocked four last year, and Conwell and Warren each have multiple blocks in their careers.

UC DAVIS REPORT: The upcoming campaign marks the first season since its final Division II year in 2002 that the Aggies will be eligible for the postseason.

The university embarked on a four-year reclassification to Division I status in 2003 and was ineligible for the playoffs during that time. Beginning this season, UC Davis will be eligible to compete for an at-large berth in the NCAA I-FCS playoffs. The Aggies will begin their fourth season in the Great West Football Conference but the league does not have an automatic berth into the playoffs.

UC Davis returns 46 letterwinners, including 14 starters, from last year's squad which won its final two games for a 6-5 record to secure its 37th consecutive winning season.

The Aggies finished the year ranked 24th by coaches in the College Sporting News poll and were No. 29 by The Sports Network. They reached No. 16 in both polls during the midseason. The only 2007 preseason magazine to place UC Davis in the top 25 so far is Phil Steele's College Football Preview Magazine, which has it at No. 23.

Six starters return to the offensive side of the ball, including sophomore wide receiver Chris Carter (54 rec., 703 yds, 5 TD's) and junior guard Jonathan Compas, who both earned All-Great West Football Conference honors. Additionally, Carter was named the league's Rookie of the Year.

Defensively, six starters return as well, led by junior tackle John Faletoese, who had a team-high 9.5 tackles-for-losses and is a preseason All-American by Street & Smith's College Football Yearbook. Senior defensive end James Amos is one of six Aggies who have received preseason All-GWFC by media outlets. He returns after posting 45 tackles and 3.5 quarterback sacks.

Among the key losses for UC Davis are 2005 All-America and school record-holder for receptions Tony Kays, three-year starting quarterback Jon Grant and All-America free safety Jonathan Barsi. The Aggies also lost three starters off the offensive line and two other starters in the defensive secondary.

SIMMONS IS PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA PICK: Western senior linebacker Shane Simmons was named to the D2football.com Preseason All-America second-team. Simmons also was among 15 pro hopefuls selected by that same website.

The 6-foot-1, 230-pound Simmons was the NCAA Division II national leader in solo tackles (9.8 avg. per game) and topped the North Central Conference in total tackles (11.2 avg.) through the first five games in 2006 before suffering a season-ending injury.

Simmons was a second-team NCC all-star last season, being named the league's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Vikings' 16-13 upset of No.15 Washburn. In that game, he was credited with 11 tackles and forced a fumble that led to the winning field goal with 2.7 seconds left.

Simmons finished the season with 56 tackles (49 solo), including seven for losses of 26 yards and one quarterback sack for minus-4 yards. He had double-figure tackle totals for four of the five games he competed in.

As a sophomore, Simmons was named a first-team Great Northwest Athletic Conference all-star. He saw action in three games as a true freshman in 2004 at the University of Idaho.

GARNER PUTS FOUR-GAME 100-YARD RUSHING STREAK ON THE LINE: Sophomore running back Craig Garner ended last season with four straight 100-yard rushing games, becoming the first Viking player to accomplish that feat since 1999. He ran for 180 yards vs. Central Washington, 133 vs. Western Oregon, 108 vs. Augustana SD and 166 vs. Minnesota State, Mankato. A second-team North Central Conference all-star last season, Garner started five games including the last four. Garner ranked sixth among NCC runners with 655 yards (5.1 apc) and six touchdowns on 129 attempts with a long of 59 yards. In his last four games, he ran for 587 yards (146.8 per game and 5.5 per carry) and five touchdowns.

PERRY IS COMEBACK LEADER: Junior quarterback Adam Perry came off the bench last year to be a central figure in three Western comeback victories. Perry threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Travis McKee with 7:35 remaining to lift the Vikings to a 10-6 win over Augustana SD. Against St. Cloud State, he replaced senior starter James Monrean with eight minutes remaining and helped Western pull off its biggest comeback in 40 years. The Vikings trailed 17-3 when Perry was sent in. He threw a 10-yard touchdown that made it 17-10. The Vikings' defense took over from there, blocking consecutive St. Cloud punts. The first set up a short rushing touchdown that tied it 17-17, and the second was returned 2 yards for the winning touchdown by Steve Davis with 43 seconds left. Against Western Oregon, Perry replaced an injured Monrean and led a 68-yard scoring drive that turned a 14-10 deficit into a 17-14 victory. Perry's only start came in the season finale against Minnesota State, Mankato. He passed for 215 yards and two touchdowns, completing 14 of 25 attempts, and ran 10 times for 49 yards and one touchdown in a 35-21 victory.

WWU INJURY REPORT: Redshirt freshman free safety Zach Schrader (shoulder sprain) and senior fullback Tieba Bropleh (broken arm), both projected starters, will each miss four to six weeks. Schrader sustained his injury in last Friday's scrimmage and Bropleh suffered his injury in the first preseason scrimmage. Outside linebacker Steve Davis will miss the UC Davis game with a foot injury.

BATTLE IN SEATTLE: The fifth annual Wells Fargo Battle in Seattle for the Cascade Cup between arch-rivals Western and Central Washington takes place Oct. 20 (6 p.m.) at Qwest Field. The contest has surpassed 11,000 all four years with the 2003 meeting being played before 16,392, a record for a non-NCAA Division I collegiate football game in the state of Washington.

NCC PRESEASON POLL: Western is picked to finish ninth among nine teams in both the 2007 preseason North Central Conference coaches and media polls. Defending co-champion North Dakota was the first-place pick in both polls.

HEAD COACHES: Robin Ross (Washington State, 1977) is in his second year (5-6) as head coach at Western and has three decades of coaching experience. He was the defensive coordinator for two of the finest Viking teams in school history in the mid-1990s.

Ross has spent most of his career as an assistant at the NCAA Division I-A level. He also coached in the National Football League, being the linebackers coach with Oakland for two seasons, helping the Raiders have the ninth-ranked defense in the NFL in 2000, when they were 12-4 and reached the AFC Championship Game.

In 2005, Ross was linebackers coach at Oregon State University, where the Beavers led the PAC 10 in run defense, allowing 108.0 yards per game. He spent the previous four seasons as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at University of Oregon. The Ducks won the 2001 PAC 10 championship, finishing second in the ESPN Coaches Poll after defeating Colorado in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl. He was also at Oregon as an assistant during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Ross came to Western in 1994 and in his first season the Vikings led the NAIA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 11.5 points a game and five times holding opponents without a touchdown. Western, which posted its first national playoff victory that season with a 21-2 triumph at No.1-ranked Linfield, ranked third nationally in rushing defense at 76.0 yards a contest and fifth in total defense (260.3) with 42 takeaways (26 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries).

In 1995, Western finished 9-1, going 9-0 for the first undefeated regular-season for the school in 57 years and being ranked No.1 nationally in NAIA II for five weeks. The defense allowed 13.7 points a game, ranking seventh nationally in that category.

Immediately prior to coming to Western, Ross had been defensive coordinator at Iowa State University from 1987 to 1993. He has also been a defensive coordinator at Fresno State University (1996) and University of Cincinnati (1984 and 1985).

Ross, 53, began his coaching career at Long Beach State University in 1977. A graduate of Washington State University, where he also spent one season as a defensive line coach, Ross was a second-team all-PAC-8 pick as an offensive lineman. He was a 10th round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1976, and spent one preseason with the Seattle Seahawks.

Ross, who is the 13th head coach in the 96-year history of Western football, is a graduate of El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, Calif. He and wife Jean have been married for 26 years.

Bob Biggs (UC Davis, 1973) is beginning his 15th year as head coach with a record of 114-48-1 (.702) and 28th season overall at UC Davis. He is the second winningest coach in school history. In 1993 and 2000, Biggs was named AFCA Region 5 College Division Coach of the Year. Biggs, a member of the Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, earned Associated Press Little All-America honors as a quarterback for the Aggies and was the NCAA II national passing leader in 1972.

VIKINGS ARE FOOTBALL-ONLY MEMBER OF NCC: Western is a football-only member of the North Central Conference, one of the nation's most prestigious NCAA II alignments. The Vikings, along with arch-rival Central Washington, begin playing a full slate of eight NCC games last fall. The two schools had been competing as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The NCC, founded in 1921, currently has nine members in all, the others being Augustana SD, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State MN and South Dakota. This is the final year of the NCC, which placed three teams in the 2006 national playoffs, as two schools are leaving NCAA Division II for Division I-FCS after this season.

WWU FOOTBALL RETURNS TO GNAC IN 2008: Western will move to a new five-team football alignment as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference beginning in 2008.

The Vikings, who already compete in the GNAC in five men's and seven women's sports, will return to the loop for football after a two-year absence. They won GNAC gridiron titles in 2001 and 2003.

Humboldt State, located in Arcata, Calif., and Dixie State, in Saint George, Utah, will join Western and its fellow GNAC members Central Washington and Western Oregon University in the GNAC football league.

Humboldt State and Dixie State, currently members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the PacWest Conference, respectively, will be granted affiliate membership in the GNAC for football and the football conference will operate under the auspices of the GNAC. Neither the CCAA nor the PacWest sponsors football.

The new league will involve all five NCAA Division II schools in the West that sponsor football. The schools will play a home-and-home format, providing eight conference games each year.

Humboldt State, Central Washington, Western and Western Oregon previously competed in the GNAC in football between 2001 and 2005. The GNAC, however, dropped its sponsorship of football following the 2005 season when Central and Western elected to move their football programs to the NCC and Humboldt State left the GNAC to become a member of the CCAA.

Dixie State is currently in its first season as a NCAA Division II member.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING: None

LAST MEETING WITH UC DAVIS: Oct. 18, 2003 at Davis, Calif.

UC Davis scored 10 points in the final two minutes of the first half and added two touchdowns in a 1:09 span of the third quarter to break the game open as the Aggies defeated Western, 48-19, before a Homecoming crowd of 7,628 at Toomey Field.

Western trailed just 17-12 after a 14-yard pass from quarterback Steve Nichols to wide receiver Matt Wilson. But UC Davis quarterback Jon Barragan, who also threw for three touchdowns, ran for a 4-yard score with 1:50 left in the first half, and Dusty Apocotos added a 32-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the period to give the Aggies a 27-12 edge at halftime.

UC Davis then put the game away midway through the third period. Barragan threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nolan deGraaff, and on Western's next series, Nichols was intercepted by Jashaun McCowan, who returned the pick 24 yards, making the score 41-12.

The Aggies had a 578-362 edge in total offense. Barragan completed 19-of-28 passes for 325 yards and also ran for 41 yards. Running back Antar Mahasin added 91 yards on 17 rushing attempts and 64 more on four receptions.

Western's defense forced four turnovers, with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, matching their totals of the first six games, but was unable to take advantage of the UC miscues, getting just three points off them, and only one first down on the four subsequent possessions.

Running back Duncan Sherrard rushed for a game-high 96 yards on 17 carries for the Vikings. Nichols was 11-of-23 for 131 yards with one touchdown and one interception. James Monrean replaced Nichols midway through the third period and was 9-of-18 for 120 yards with one touchdown, a 17-yard connection with Brett Upchurch on the final play of the game. The Vikings were 1-of-14 on third down.

Western scored on the opening series of the game, going 52 yards in nine plays to set up a 32-yard field goal by Michael Koenen.

The Aggies came right back, moving 80 yards in 10 plays, capped by an 8-yard touchdown pass from Barragan to Billy Zeier, then extended the margin to 10-7 on the following series, as Barragan completed passes of 34 yards to Daniel Fells and 33 yards to Kevin Freeman to set up a 32-yard field goal by Dusty Apocotos.

Two Aggie turnovers gave the Vikings opportunities in the second quarter. Free safety Justin Coronado, who was making his first start, intercepted Barragan and returned it 35 yards to the Aggie 25, but Western failed to move the ball and Koenen's field-goal attempt was blocked. On the following series, defensive tackle Nick Ball recovered a Barragan fumble, leading to a 51-yard field goal by Koenen. That made the score 10-6 early in the second quarter, but Western got no closer.

Last year, Western finished 3-3 at home after having a 1-3 record at Civic Stadium in 2005, its first losing record at home since 1990 (2-3).

NEXT GAME: Western has a bye next week, then travels to meet 2006 NCC co-champion Nebraska-Omaha on Sept. 15 (12 noon).

HOME OPENERS: The Vikings debut at home Sept. 22 (6 p.m.) against preseason NCC favorite and 2006 league co-champion North Dakota. Western has split its last six home openers, upsetting No.15 Washburn, 16-13, in last year's debut at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. The Vikings won six straight home openers from 1995 to 2000 and nine of 10 from 1991 to 2000.
