BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University scored three second-half goals as it upset league-leading Montana State University Billings, 3-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer contest Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings, who snapped a two-game losing streak, improved to 4-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 league.
MSUB, which suffered its first loss of the season, dropped to 7-1-1 overall and 3-1-1 in GNAC action. The Yellowjackets had given up just two goals in its first eight games.
Western scored twice in just over three minutes midway through the second half as Chris Jepson (So., Bellingham) found the left corner with a shot from 35 yards in the 65th minute, and Samir Vejo (Jr., Trebinje, Bosnia) scored from 10 yards on a pass from Michael Ricci (So., Bellevue/Newport) in the 68th minute.
The Vikings scored again in the 75th minute as Gibson Bardsley (Fr., Fall City/Mount Si) took a long pass from Oliver Wellman (Jr., Bellevue) and put it in from 10 yards.
It was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Bardsley, tying him for most goals by a Viking freshman since 1985. Vejo now has four goals and it was Jepson's first.
Western goalkeeper Michael Lockwood (Sr., Canby, OR/Skagit Valley CC) made two saves in posting his second shutout of the season and the Vikings' third overall.
Western had a 20-8 advantage in shots.
The Vikings host Grand Canyon on Monday (5 p.m.) in a non-conference contest.
