BELLINGHAM, Wash. -

UPCOMING GAME: Western Washington University Vikings (1-2, 0-2) vs. University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs (1-3, 0-2) in a North Central Conference contest Saturday, Sept. 29 (11 a.m. PT) at Malosky Stadium (4,000 cap., Artificial Turf) in Duluth, Minn. It is UMD's annual Homecoming/Hall of Fame game.

The Vikings are coming off perhaps the toughest opening three games of any NCAA Division II team in the country. Last week in their home opener, they lost 63-42 to No.2-ranked North Dakota in the highest-scoring game in school and NCC history.

The previous week, Western was beaten 45-10 at No.8 Nebraska-Omaha. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Vikings, who, had opened the season with a 28-21 victory at NCAA I-FCS UC Davis.

North Dakota and Nebraska-Omaha shared the NCC title last year, and UC Davis is working on a string of 37 winning seasons.

Minnesota Duluth had just 31 rushing yards in a 43-21 loss at Central Washington last week. The Bulldogs, who have dropped three straight contests, opened their season with three home games, all against top 20 teams. They won the opener 31-14 over No.20 Bemidji State NE, then committed six turnovers in a 45-27 loss to No.20 Missouri Western State, and fell 36-22 to No.19 South Dakota after leading in the fourth quarter.

SERIES HISTORY: Second meeting. Western trails 1-0. Last year, the Vikings lost 20-10 at Bellingham.

CIVIC STADIUM: Western is in its 46th year of playing home games at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. The Vikings have a 121-87-7 (.579) record at that facility which was built in 1961. Last year, Western finished 3-3 at home after having a 1-3 record at Civic Stadium in 2005, its first losing mark at home since 1990 (2-3).

RADIO: KBAI (930 AM-Bellingham) is broadcasting all Western football games live this season with sports director Doug Lange handling the play-by-play duties for the 12th consecutive season. Providing the color commentary for the 10th straight year is former Viking quarterback Jason Stiles. TICKET INFORMATION: Tickets for Viking football cost $12 for reserved seating, $10 for general admission adults, $6 for students and seniors and $3 for Western students. For ticket information, contact the WWU Athletic Department at 360-650-2583 (BLUE). Season tickets are available for $44.

VIKING REPORT: Western is looking to regroup after completing the toughest part of its schedule and coming off perhaps the wildest game in school history.

The Vikings have given up 108 points in their last two games, and on the season are allowing averages of 43.0 points, 522.7 total yards and 6.1 yards per rushing carry. In a 63-42 loss last week to No.2 North Dakota, they gave up 622 yards and 63 points.

The defensive unit, which has had five starters go down with injuries, is led by senior middle linebacker Shane Simmons, a 2007 preseason D2football.com All-America and a second-team all-NCC pick last year, who has a NCC-leading 33 tackles and 2.5 tackles for losses of minus-10 yards.

Junior outside linebacker Caleb Jessup and redshirt freshman strong safety Allan Denton each have 22 stops.

Offensively, the Vikings have standout sophomore running back Craig Garner, who ran for a career-high 192 yards against North Dakota, tying a school record with four touchdowns, after racking up 140 yards the previous week at Nebraska-Omaha. He is averaging 119.3 yards per game on the ground this season (358 total), fourth in the NCC, with five touchdowns, and is averaging 19.3 yards on 10 kickoff returns.

Directing the WWU attack is sophomore quarterback Adam Perry, who has completed 60.4 percent of his passes (61-of-101) for 742 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions. In the Vikings' win at UC Davis, Perry threw for 362 yards, the seventh-highest total in school history, connecting on 31-of-46 attempts, two for touchdowns. That earned him College Sports Report National Division II Football Performer of the Week and NCC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Perry's top receivers are sophomore Rick Copsey, 13 catches for 167 yards and one touchdown; senior Casey Dell, 13 catches for 140 yards; and junior Travis McKee, 12 catches for 101 yards and one touchdown. Freshman transfer Rocki Sandusky is averaging 40.8 yards on four catches, one for a touchdown. Dell is averaging 10.8 yards in six punt returns.

Sophomore placekicker Josh Lider has made all four of his field goal attempts, three against UC Davis, hitting from 22, 18, 32 and 37 yards. Senior punter Corbin Anderson is averaging 41.0 yards on 13 boots, including a school-record effort of 79 yards against UC Davis as he was named NCC Special Teams Player of the Week.

Western leads the NCC in red zone efficiency at 84.6 percent with seven touchdowns and four field goals.

MINNESOTA DULUTH REPORT: The Bulldogs have lost just eight times in their last 41 home games at Malosky Stadium, but two of those setbacks have been this season. Leading a wide-open attack that often features five receivers is junior quarterback Ted Schlafke, who has passed for 986 yards (107-177-6, .605) and 12 touchdowns and run for a team-leading 191 yards.

In 2005, Schlafke set school records for completions (305), attempts (490), passing yards (3,335), total yards (3,591) and total plays (625); and holds single-game marks in all five categories. His career totals stand at a school-record 664 completions for 6,857 yards (UMD record is 8,711) and 61 touchdowns (UMD record is 90). He has thrown a touchdown pass in 25 of his last 26 games.

Against Missouri Western State, Schlafke threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns, while running for a career-high 91 yards. Last week versus Central Washington, he completed 73.2 percent of his passes, connecting on 30-of-41 for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

Six UMD receivers have double-digit catches. They are Dennis Carter (20-219, 8 TDs), Tony Doherty (20-202), Noah Pauley (17-102-1), Brandan Anson (13-161-1), Bryan Gambuzza (12-154-1) and Joe Russell (12-65). Carter is averaging 22.5 yards on eight kickoff returns with a long of 44.

Leading the defensive unit, which sacked the quarterback 10 times in the season-opening win over Bemidji State, are Tyler Yelk (34 tackles, 1 int., 2 breakups and 1 blocked kick), Jim Johnson 31 tackles and Dustin Timmerman (4 TFL, 3 sacks-15).

Punter Luke Radke leads NCC punters with a 42.4 average (17 att.), including a long of 61 yards.

The Bulldogs top the NCC in red zone efficiency at 92.3 percent (12-of-13) with 10 touchdowns and two field goals.

UMD had a streak of 38 wins when leading after three quarters, that had begun in 2001, end against No.19 South Dakota as the Bulldogs allowed 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of a 36-22 loss. UMD has lost 20 straight games when trailing at halftime.

GARNER AFTER 100, HOW ABOUT 200: Sophomore running back Craig Garner has run for 332 yards in his last two games, gaining a career-best 192 last week against North Dakota after totaling 140 the previous week at Nebraska-Omaha. That gives the elusive 5-foot-6, 160-pound speedster six 100-yard rushing efforts in Western's last seven games. His four touchdowns versus North Dakota tied a school record.

A 2006 second-team all-NCC performer, Garner ended last season with four straight 100-yard rushing games, becoming the first Viking player to accomplish that feat since 1999. Garner ran for 180 yards vs. Central Washington, 133 vs. Western Oregon, 108 vs. Augustana SD and 166 vs. Minnesota State, Mankato. He finished sixth among NCC runners with 655 yards (5.1 apc) and six touchdowns on 129 attempts with a long of 59 yards.

TALENTED ROSTER ADDITION: The Vikings have added running back Randall Eldridge to their roster. Eldridge comes via NCAA I Sam Houston State TX where he practiced with the team before leaving. The 5-foot-10, 205-pound junior from Lynnwood was a second-team Gridwire.com Junior College All-American and Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Golden Gate Conference as sophomore at Chabot Junior College in Hayward, Calif. A first-team California Community College Football Coaches Association Region II all-star, Eldridge had a league-leading 1,277 rushing yards (5.6 yards per carry) in 10 games. He scored 12 rushing touchdowns with long of 62 and also had 154 yards receiving and 31 on kick returns for 1,462 all-purpose yards.

VIKING NOTES: Middle linebacker Shane Simmons, a second-team preseason D2Football.com All-America, has had double-figure tackles in seven of the eight games he has played for Western since transferring from Idaho. Last year, Simmons was leading NCAA II in solo tackles per game (9.8) until having his season end after five games because of a shoulder injury ... WWU's four-game winning streak that was snapped by Nebraska-Omaha was the Vikings' longest since 2002 when they opened with four wins ... Western quarterback Adam Perry and punter Corbin Anderson were NCC co-offensive and co-special teams Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances in the Vikings' 28-21 win at NCAA Division I-FCS UC Davis on Sept. 1. Perry also was named the College Sports Report Division II Football Performer of the Week.

WWU INJURY REPORT: Reserve sophomore linebacker Dan Winter (hamstring), junior defensive tackle Junior Aumavae (elbow) and senior linebacker James Day (knee) all remain doubtful for this week. Three players, who sustained injuries during preseason practice, have yet to return. They senior fullback Tieba Bropleh (broken arm), outside linebacker Steve Davis (foot), and redshirt freshman free safety Zach Schrader (shoulder sprain).

BATTLE IN SEATTLE: The fifth annual Wells Fargo Battle in Seattle for the Cascade Cup between arch-rivals Western and Central Washington takes place Oct. 20 (6 p.m.) at Qwest Field. The contest has surpassed 11,000 all four years with the 2003 meeting being played before 16,392, a record for a non-NCAA Division I collegiate football game in the state of Washington.

NCC PRESEASON POLL: Western is picked to finish ninth among nine teams in both the 2007 preseason North Central Conference coaches and media polls. Defending co-champion North Dakota was the first-place pick in both polls.

HEAD COACHES: Robin Ross (Washington State, 1977) is in his second year (6-8) as head coach at Western and has three decades of coaching experience. He was the defensive coordinator for two of the finest Viking teams in school history in the mid-1990s.

Ross has spent most of his career as an assistant at the NCAA Division I-A level. He also coached in the National Football League, being the linebackers coach with Oakland for two seasons, helping the Raiders have the ninth-ranked defense in the NFL in 2000, when they were 12-4 and reached the AFC Championship Game.

In 2005, Ross was linebackers coach at Oregon State University, where the Beavers led the PAC 10 in run defense, allowing 108.0 yards per game. He spent the previous four seasons as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at University of Oregon. The Ducks won the 2001 PAC 10 championship, finishing second in the ESPN Coaches Poll after defeating Colorado in the 2002 Fiesta Bowl. He was also at Oregon as an assistant during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Ross came to Western in 1994 and in his first season the Vikings led the NAIA Division II in scoring defense, allowing just 11.5 points a game and five times holding opponents without a touchdown. Western, which posted its first national playoff victory that season with a 21-2 triumph at No.1-ranked Linfield, ranked third nationally in rushing defense at 76.0 yards a contest and fifth in total defense (260.3) with 42 takeaways (26 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries).

In 1995, Western finished 9-1, going 9-0 for the first undefeated regular-season for the school in 57 years and being ranked No.1 nationally in NAIA II for five weeks. The defense allowed 13.7 points a game, ranking seventh nationally in that category.

Immediately prior to coming to Western, Ross had been defensive coordinator at Iowa State University from 1987 to 1993. He has also been a defensive coordinator at Fresno State University (1996) and University of Cincinnati (1984 and 1985).

Ross, 53, began his coaching career at Long Beach State University in 1977. A graduate of Washington State University, where he also spent one season as a defensive line coach, Ross was a second-team all-PAC-8 pick as an offensive lineman. He was a 10th round draft pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 1976, and spent one preseason with the Seattle Seahawks.

Ross, who is the 13th head coach in the 96-year history of Western football, is a graduate of El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, Calif. He and wife Jean have been married for 26 years.

Kyle "Bubba" Schweigert (Jamestown College, 1985) is in his fourth season at Minnesota-Duluth and has a 19-18 record. In 2005, he earned NCC Coach of the Year honors, guiding the Bulldogs to an 8-4 mark with wins over three AFCA top 20 teams, a share of the school's first NCC title and their second NCAA II playoff berth in four seasons. That earned him AFCA II Region 5 Coach of the Year accolades. Prior to being named head coach at Minnesota-Duluth, Schweigert spent 15 seasons as an assistant at North Dakota, helping the Fighting Sioux to six NCC championships and eight national playoff appearances (reached semifinals four times, and title game twice, winning national championship in 2001).

VIKINGS ARE FOOTBALL-ONLY MEMBER OF NCC: Western is a football-only member of the North Central Conference, one of the nation's most prestigious NCAA II alignments. The Vikings, along with arch-rival Central Washington, begin playing a full slate of eight NCC games last fall. The two schools had been competing as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The NCC, founded in 1921, currently has nine members in all, the others being Augustana SD, Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State MN and South Dakota. This is the final year of the NCC, which placed three teams in the 2006 national playoffs, as two schools are leaving NCAA Division II for Division I-FCS after this season.

WWU FOOTBALL RETURNS TO GNAC IN 2008: Western will move to a new five-team football alignment as part of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference beginning in 2008. The Vikings, who already compete in the GNAC in five men's and seven women's sports, will return to the loop for football after a two-year absence. They won GNAC gridiron titles in 2001 and 2003.

Humboldt State, located in Arcata, Calif., and Dixie State in Saint George, Utah, will join Western and its fellow GNAC members Central Washington and Western Oregon in the GNAC football league. Humboldt State and Dixie State, currently members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association and the PacWest Conference, respectively, will be granted affiliate membership in the GNAC for football and the football conference will operate under the auspices of the GNAC. Neither the CCAA nor the PacWest sponsors football.

The new league will involve all five NCAA Division II schools in the West that sponsor football. The schools will play a home-and-home format, providing eight conference games each year.

Humboldt State, Central Washington, Western and Western Oregon previously competed in the GNAC in football between 2001 and 2005. The GNAC, however, dropped its sponsorship of football following the 2005 season when Central and Western elected to move their football programs to the NCC and Humboldt State left the GNAC to become a member of the CCAA.

Dixie State is currently in its second season as a NCAA Division II member.

LAST WEEK'S GAME:

North Dakota 63, Western Washington 42 at Bellingham

No.2 Fighting Sioux pull away in second half of highest-scoring game in NCC history

Running back Ryan Chappell rushed for 214 yards on 24 carries, including four second-half touchdowns, helping nationally ranked North Dakota pull away from a halftime tie and claim a 63-42 North Central Conference victory Saturday over Western at Civic Stadium.

UND, rated No.2 in the latest American Football Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the NCC.

Western allowed the most points in a game since a 66-0 loss at Nevada in 1978.

The combined 105 points were the most ever scored in a Western football game, and also set an NCC record, breaking the mark of 102 set in South Dakota State's 60-42 victory over Mankato State in 1993. The two teams combined for 1,092 yards of offense, with UND having a 622-470 advantage.

Craig Garner had a career-high 192 yards on 31 carries and a school record-tying four touchdowns for Western. It was his sixth 100-yard rushing effort in the Vikings' last seven games.

Chappell had just 27 yards on six carries in the first half, but ran for 82 yards in the first two Fighting Sioux possessions of the second half, capping the drives with scoring runs of 5 and 15 yards, to give UND a 35-21 lead.

On UND's next possession, quarterback Danny Freund hit wide receiver Brady Trenbeath on a 40-yard touchdown pass set up by play-action.

Western narrowed the gap to 42-28 on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Adam Perry to wide receiver Travis McKee, then recovered an onside kick. But Perry was intercepted by Drake Otto on the final play of the third period, and on the first play of the fourth quarter, Chappell burst 90 yards down the left sideline, giving the Fighting Sioux a 49-28 lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.

Perry completed 21-of-33 passes for 276 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Freund was 17-of-22 for 319 yards with five touchdowns and one interception, going 11-of-14 for195 yards in the opening half. UND wide receiver Weston Dressler had seven receptions for 165 yards, and rolled up 236 all-purpose yards, all in the first half.

It was the fourth straight game the Fighting Sioux exceeded 500 yards of total offense, and they scored their most points in an NCC game since a 69-0 triumph over Morningside in 1972.

Each team scored three touchdowns in the first 24 minutes. Western opened the game with an 11-play, 80 yard drive. Garner rushed six times for 55 yards in the march, setting up a 1-yard sneak by Perry less than six minutes into the game.

UND responded with back-to-back scoring drives - going 66 yards in eight plays, capped by Freund's 7-yard pass to fullback Andrew Sorbo; then taking a 14-7 lead Dressler for a 10-yard score to complete a 10-play, 87-yard march.

Western came right back, as Garner, on the first play from scrimmage, bounced outside and sprinted down left sideline for 63-yard touchdown, but UND responded 1-play drive of its own, as Dressler got behind Viking defense for a 61-yard touchdown reception.

The Vikings completed the scoring explosion on the following series. Perry completed passes to convert on third-and-22 and third-and-10, leading to a 7-yard touchdown run by Garner.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING WITH UMD:

Sept. 30 at Bellingham - Minnesota Duluth 20, Western 10

Vikings can't overcome early deficit against Bulldogs

Quarterback Ted Schlafke threw for 329 yards and a touchdown as Minnesota Duluth defeated Western, 20-10, in a NCC game at Civic Stadium.

Schlafke completed 25-of-38 passes, including an 8-yard scoring toss to Greg Aker in the first quarter that helped the Bulldogs take a 10-0 lead just 6:51 into the game. Schlafke threw for 204 yards in the first quarter alone.

UMD extended its lead to 17-0 in the second quarter as receiver LaShawn Bullock took an option pitch to the left and flipped a pass to Aker in the end zone for an 8-yard score.

UMD had a 288-57 edge in total offense in the first half, and finished the game with a 370-248 advantage.

Western reached the scoreboard on its opening possession of the second half, marching 69 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 3-yard pass from quarterback James Monrean to tight end Logan Cullen, narrowing the margin to 17-7.

UMD extended its lead to 20-7 late in the third quarter on a 28-yard field goal by Britt Baumann, who also hit a 32-yarder in the first period.

Western again closed to within 10, 20-10, on a 29-yard field goal by Robby Smith early in the fourth quarter, but Smith missed from 47 yards on the following series with 5:40 to play. The Bulldogs then ran nine plays before being forced to punt with 1:35 left, and a fumble on the punt return was recovered by UMD's Dan Kitsberger, allowing the Bulldogs to run out the clock.

Running back Calvin McCarty was the main cog in Western's offense, rushing for 96 yards on 22 carries and having six receptions for 47 yards. Monrean completed 14-of-20 passes for 172 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Western committed three turnovers after not giving up the ball in the previous three games.

Linebacker Shane Simmons led the Western defense with 12 tackles, including three for loss. Defensive end Matt Overton batted down three passes.

NEXT GAME: The Vikings are home to meet St. Cloud State University in a NCC contest on Oct. 6 (1 p.m.) at Civic Stadium. The Huskies, who host Central Washington on Saturday (6 p.m. CT), are 3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. Last week, they suffered their first loss, 31-0 at No.17 South Dakota State.
