BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University placed 10 student-athletes, seven women and three men, on the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic All-Star team announced today.
Leading that group was men's midfielder Joel Grossman (Sr., Anacortes), who is a business administration major with a 3.82 (4.0 scale) grade point average.
Women's goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent (Sr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), who is majoring in cellular and molecular biology, is maintaining a 3.66 GPA.
Two of her teammates, defender Kasey Hostetler (Jr., Richland/Hanford) and midfielder Jenny Barton (Jr., Boise, ID/Borah) have respective GPAs of 3.52 and 3.51. Hostetler is a biochemistry major and Barton is majoring in art design.
Completing Western's honorees are women's defender Bryn Gibson (Jr., Bellevue/Interlake), business administration and marketing, 3.37 GPA; men's midfielder Michael Ricci (Jr., Bellevue/Newport), economics and political science, 3.35 GPA; women's defender Meghan Woodman (Jr., Redmond), pre-physical therapy, 3.33 GPA; men's defender Cris Geday (So., Vancouver/Skyview), physical education/pre-medicine, 3.25 GPA; women's forward Lucy Miller (Jr., Palisades, CA/Pacific Palisades), psychology, 3.20 GPA; and women's defender Katie Warner (Sr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison), Spanish, 3.20 GPA.
Barton, Hostetler, Ricci and Warner were all repeat selections.
To be eligible for the academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.

Sixty-Six Named To GNAC Soccer Academic Team
SPOKANE - A total of 66 student-athletes - 51 women and 15 men - have been named to the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Soccer Academic all-star team.
Heading up the women's academic team is Claire Grubbs of Seattle Pacific. The SPU senior from Sterling, Virginia, who is a psychology major, has a cumulative GPA of 3.96. Last week, she was named to the CoSIDA (Sports Information Directors Association) Soccer Academic District 8 College Division team for the third time, joining Seattle University's Ashley Porter (2005-07) as the only women's soccer player to accomplish that feat.
Two other women - Melissa Carlson of Montana State Billings (3.92) and Liz Gross of Northwest Nazarene (3.90) - also have cumulative GPAs of 3.90 or better.
Saint Martin's and Seattle Pacific each placed nine players on the women's team, while Montana State Billings and Northwest Nazarene each earned eight spots on the academic squad.
Andy Wolverton of Seattle Pacific, a sophomore from Portland, Ore., has the top GPA (3.96) on the men's academic team. Tom Milroy and Justin Hoskins of Montana State Billings have composite GPAs of 3.91 and 3.89, respectively. MSU Billings led the men's selections for the second year in a row with seven, while Seattle Pacific had four and Western Washington placed three on the academic team.
Eight student-athletes were named to the soccer academic team for the third time, including Grubbs, Katie Taylor, Shannon Oakes and Meredith Teague, all from Seattle Pacific; Hannah Mohs, Jenna Johnson and Angie Duryea, all of Northwest Nazarene, and Lynde Clarke of Central Washington.
An additional 18 student-athletes, including 10 women and eight men earned academic all-star honors for the second time.
To be eligible for the GNAC academic team, student-athletes must have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 and be in at least their second year of competition at their university.
