Dec. 10, 2009

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Two strong national finishes in men's and women's cross country propelled Western Washington University into a tie for 18th place in the second installment of the 2009-10 Learfield Directors' Cup/NCAA Division II standings.

The Vikings have 146 points after the men's cross country team placed fourth and the women eighth at the NCAA II Championships.

Last year, Western had its highest placing of 10th in the final standings.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports - seven women's and seven men's.

The final Division II fall standings will be released Wednesday, Dec. 23.
