EUGENE, Ore. - Jordan Welling (So., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) and Rachael Johnson (So., Yakima/West Valley) each set school records, highlighting Western Washington University performances at the University of Oregon Twilight track and field meet Saturday at Hayward Field.
Welling crushed the Western standard in the men's 5,000 by finishing third in 14:16.90, nearly 15 seconds better than the mark set by Anthony Tomsich two years ago.
Johnson broke a 25-year old record in the women's 800. She placed seventh in the race, but her time of 2:12.30 bettered the mark of 2:12.79 set by Jeanna Setera in 1984.
Welling and Johnson both improved on their provisional qualifying times for the NCAA Division II National Championships, as did Michelle Howe (So., Arlington/Lakewood), who placed third in the women's 100 hurdles (14.52).
Narrowly missing a school record was the women's 4x100 meter relay team of Heidi Dimmitt (Sr., Wenatchee), Megan Zukowski (So., Maple Valley/Tahoma), Joana Houplin (So., Olympia) and Ellie Siler (Fr., Spokane/Lewis & Clark), which finished second in a season-best 47.88.
Dimmitt and Siler also joined with Sarah Brownell (So., Yelm) and Megan O'Connell (So., Sammamish/Skyline) to win the 4x400 relay in 3:50.43.
Emily Warman (Fr., Sedro-Woolley) was fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 38-71/2.
The meet was the final regular-season event for the Vikings. The NCAA II National Championship selections will be announced Tuesday.
