PHOENIX, Arizona - Two freshmen scored their first collegiate goals and goalkeeper Cameron Copps-Tilley (Sr., Vancouver/Fort Vancouver) made five saves in registering a shutout as Western Washington University blanked Mesa State College, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game Sunday night at the Grand Canyon University Soccer Field.
The Vikings, playing their first road contest following five home games to open the season, snapped a two-game losing streak as they improved to 3-3-0. Two of those losses have been in overtime to nationally ranked teams.
Mesa State fell to 0-4-1.
"It was a good game for us," said Western coach Travis Connell. "The freshmen came up big for us and scored goals, and we relied on the senior leadership of Cameron (Copps-Tilley) in goal."
Western freshman forward Justin Moore (Port Orchard/South Kitsap) scored his first collegiate goal in the 23rd minute from 12 yards out after a shot by Chris Jepson (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome), who had made a long run, was blocked by a defender. It was the only scoring of the first half.
Sophomore Oscar Jimenez (Mount Vernon) found the net for the Vikings with a laser from 25 yards in the 48th minute after receiving a cross from Darragh Simm (Jr., Woodinville). It was the third goal of the season for Jimenez.
Western got an unassisted goal from freshman Jin Dangvan (Vancouver/Mountain View) in the 83rd minute as he beat three defenders and found the lower right corner with a left-footed shot from 20 yards.
Both teams had 13 shots and Mesa State had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
It was the first shutout of the season for Western and the seventh for Copps-Tilley during his three-year career.
It was the first meeting between the two schools.
The Vikings meet Grand Canyon at Phoenix on Tuesday (3 p.m.).
