BELLINGHAM, Wash. - All-America forward Kyle Ciliento scored both goals as Western Washington University fell to Grand Canyon University, 2-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday night at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
The Vikings had a two-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 5-5-2. Grand Canyon, which leads the Pacific West Conference standings, improved to 9-1-1.
Ciliento, a sophomore, converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute, then added an insurance marker less than five minutes into the second half, fighting off two defenders to score unassisted from 10 yards out. A first-team All-American last year, he already has 14 goals this season and 37 for his career.
Western had scored nine goals in its last two games, and seemed likely to find the net frequently again at the game's start, getting four shots off in the first five minutes. In all, the Vikings had a 29-10 advantage in shot attempts, but put just four of their efforts on target in being shut out for the only the second time this season.
"It's unusual that we can't score, especially with the control we had," said Western coach Travis Connell. "Give Grand Canyon credit for taking their chances. It's disappointing, we had a lot of the play, but that doesn't win you games unless you score."
Forward Gibson Bardsley (Sr., Fall City/Mount Si) seemed to have put Western on the board in the 26th minute, only to have his finish of a rebound called back for offsides.
Midfielder Kellan Brown (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) also had a chance to equalize in the second half, but his shot was first saved, then after a mad scramble the ball hit the crossbar and went out for a goalkick. Ciliento's second goal came a little over a minute later.
Western ends its three-game non-conference home stand Monday (4 p.m.) against Mary ND.
