Updated Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - With all of the NCAA Division II winter sports championships completed, Western Washington University is 14th among 288 schools in the latest Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings released today.
The Vikings received 58.5 points in men's indoor track, 57.75 in women's indoor track, 50 in men's basketball and 25 in women's basketball. That gave them a winter sports total of 191.25 for an overall total of 337.25.
Western reached the West Regional semifinals in men's basketball and the first round in women's basketball. The Vikings tied for 14th place at the national indoor track meet in the men's division and tied for 16th place in the women's division.
Western is the top West Region school in the most recent Sports Directors' Cup standings. Seattle Pacific ranks 18th, UC San Diego 19th and Alaska Anchorage 20th.
The Vikings could climb even higher when the final standings come out in June. They have won the last five national titles in women's rowing and performed well nationally in outdoor men's and women's track and men's and women's golf.
Last year, Western placed 10th in the Sports Director's Cup standings, the highest finish in school history. The Vikings' previous best was 20th in 2007-08.
Last fall, Western placed fourth in the men's division at the national cross country championships and eighth in the women's division.
Defending champion Grand Valley State MI leads the Sports Directors' Cup standings with 710.5 points.
The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup is a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's NCAA finish in up to 14 sports - seven men's and seven women's.
