MONMOUTH, Ore. - Designated hitter Jackie Rothenberger (Fr., Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) drove in three runs and pitcher Erika Quint (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) gave up just one run as Western Washington University defeated Western Oregon University, 5-1, in the nightcap of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Sunday.
The Vikings, who lost 6-2 in the opener, are 22-21 overall and 18-14 in GNAC action. They have won nine of their last 13 games. WOU is 22-10 in league play and 28-17 overall.
Quint, who improved to 10-7, went the distance for the 12th time this season, allowing five hits, walking five and striking out six. The Wolves' only run, which was unearned, came in the top of the seventh inning.
Rothenberger drove in one of two WWU runs in the first, doubled in another run in the third and led off the fifth with a solo home run, her fourth of the season. Meghan Flem (Sr., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) had a run-scoring single for the Vikings in the first as did Rachelle Berry (Fr., Alger/Burlington-Edison) in the fourth.
Stephanie Fox (So., Sammamish/Eastlake), Rothenberger, Samantha Rutherford (Jr., Kenmore/Inglemoor) and Michelle Wrigley (Jr., Bothell/Inglemoor) each had two hits. Fox and Wrigley also scored twice.
In the opener, WOU's Jessica Hallmark hit her third home run of the five-game series and 12th of the season to lead off the fourth and give the Wolves' a 4-2 lead. She was 3-for-3 in the contest, driving in two runs and scoring three. WOU plated three runs in the first and two in the sixth.
WWU was able to score only two runs off Kelsey White (7-1). Karli Baumgartner (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap), who was 2-for-3, doubled and scored on a single by Fox in the third, and Baumgartner drove in another run in the fourth with a single.
WWU took three of the five games, winning two of three Saturday.
The Vikings return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Simon Fraser on Wednesday (2 p.m.), then entertain Saint Martin's in league twinbills on Saturday (12 noon) and Sunday (11 a.m.).
