BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Pitcher Sarah McEnroe (Sr., Woodinville) allowed just three hits and Jordan Emmil (So., Colville) hit a decisive two-run home run as Western Washington University defeated Western Oregon University, 3-2, in the first game of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference tripleheader Saturday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.
In the second game, WOU scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the contest into extra innings and tallied two more in the eighth to win it 8-6. Then the Wolves took the third game 5-3.
WWU is now 13-17 overall, 2-9 at home, and 9-10 in GNAC action. Western Oregon is 19-13 overall and 13-6 in conference play.
McEnroe, 6-5, struck out five and walked one in a complete-game victory. She gave up one run in the first as Samantha Hubbard led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bailey Rueck. The Wolves' only other run came in the seventh on a lead-off homer by Amanda Fleer before McEnroe bore down to get the final three WOU batters on ground outs.
WWU had tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first, then Emmil put the Vikings ahead to stay, 3-1,with a one-out, two-run line drive over the leftfield fence. It was her first home run of the season, and the second of her two-year career, both of them against WOU.
In game two, WWU got out to a 6-2 lead as Krista Bickar (So., Hoquiam), who had three hits, doubled in two runs in the third and drove in another run in the sixth, also with a two-bagger.
The Vikings scored three times in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Meghan Flem (Sr., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) and a two-run single by Jackie Rothenberger (Fr., Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary).
WWU pitcher Erika Quint (Jr., Silverdale/Central Kitsap) gave up a run-scoring double to Rueck in the first before settling down and allowing just a homer to Andrea Bailey, that in the sixth, over the next five innings.
But in the seventh, the Wolves had three straight doubles by Ellen Bogardus, pinch hitter Miranda Little and Kendra George to get within two and Jessica Hallmark tied the game with a two-out single off reliever Erika Hendron (Fr., Redmond) (2-5).
George plated what proved to be the winning run in the eighth with a two-out single and Bailey knocked in another run with a single.
WOU pitcher Stephanie Albrecht (4-0) got the win in relief, but needed a save by Jessica Wood, who got Bickar to hit a vicious line drive to the first baseman for an unassisted double play with two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth.
In game three, the Wolves scored once in the third, and twice in the fifth and seventh for a 5-0 lead. Tyler Sutherland was 3-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring two. She hit a two-run homer over the centerfield fence in the fifth.
In the first, WWU loaded the bases with no outs and did not score. But the Vikings scored three unearned runs in the seventh and had the bases loaded before Wood got her second save by getting the last out on a popup. WOU starter Brittany Reeves (4-2) earned the win.
Flem walked nine times in the three games, giving her 23 this season.
WWU travels to Delta, B.C., to play Simon Fraser University in a non-league doubleheader Monday (5 p.m.)
