DENVER, Colo. - Forward Gibson Bardsley (Sr., Fall City/Mount Si) scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute as Western Washington University upset nationally ranked Metro State College, 2-1, in a non-conference men's soccer game Sunday at Auraria Field.
The Vikings improved to 2-1-1, extending their unbeaten streak to three with two wins and a tie. Metro State, ranked No.20 in last week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 Poll, suffered its first defeat in falling to 3-1-0.
"It was a real team win and we scored a couple of fantastic goals," said Western coach Travis Connell. "That's what it takes to win on the road."
Bardsley volleyed a thru ball from Darragh Simm (Sr., Woodinville) over the goalie at 82:40. The goal was his second of the young season and the 25th of his four-year career, tying him for third among Western's all-time leaders.
The Vikings had taken a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when freshman forward Andrew Weishaar (Puyallup) scored his second goal of the campaign on a cross from the far side by Oscar Jimenez (Jr., Mount Vernon). It was the team-leading third assist of the year for Jimenez and the 13th of his three-year career, moving him into a tie for fifth place among the school's leaders.
Metro State tied the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute. Steven Emory dribbled through two defenders, scoring on a shot from the top of the box.
That was the only attempt that got past Western goalkeeper Christian Warman (Sr., Sedro-Woolley), who made 10 saves.
"He was spectacular," Connell said. "They put a ton of pressure on us in the second half and really wore us down. They did surge through a few times, but every time Warman was up to it and turned them away."
Western next is at Colorado Christian on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
