Vikings fall 3-2 to Montana State Billings

Sept. 25, 2010

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University fell 3-2 to Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Saturday night at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom CC.

The Vikings fell to 3-3-2 overall and 0-2-1 in GNAC action with its second straight loss following a five-game unbeaten streak. MSUB improved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Jin Dangvan (So., Vancouver/Mountain View) and Kellan Brown (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) scored for Western. The Vikings, who had a 24-12 advantage in shot attempts, have scored two goals in each of the last three games, but have two losses and a tie to show for it.

"We're giving up too many easy goals and until we stop doing that we'll struggle," said Western coach Travis Connell. "How many times can we score two goals and lose? It's awful."

Thomas Sheets opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets in the 11th minute, bending a shot inside the near post from 12 yards out for the only goal of the first half. Western equalized in the 50th minute, as Dangvan tapped in the rebound of a Kenny Parker (So., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) shot, but the 1-1 score lasted less than six minutes.

MSUB regained the lead in the 56th minute, as Chris Andre, with his back to goal, hit a looping overhead shot that went just under the crossbar for his fifth score of the season. The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 3-1 in the 69th minute as Peter Davies scored on a breakaway after a 70-yard pass from Ryan Covey.

The Vikings responded with a late rally, Brown converting a penalty kick with 3:25 left. They nearly tied the match 90 seconds later, as Andrew Weishaar (Fr., Puyallup) won the ball after a mad scramble and had a shot from six yards, but MSUB goalkeeper Matt Mitchell made a sprawling save, his seventh of the game, to preserve the Yellowjacket lead.

Western next travels to Simon Fraser on Sunday, Oct. 3 (3 p.m.) for a GNAC contest.
