Western ties at Cal State Stanislaus, 4-4 in overtime

Sept. 4, 2010

Box Score

TURLOCK, Calif. - Midfielder Oscar Jimenez (Jr., Mount Vernon) had a goal and an assist as Western Washington University tied Cal State Stanislaus, 4-4 in overtime, in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday at Warrior Stadium.

The tie put the Vikings' record at 0-1-1. It was the season opener for Cal State Stanislaus.

Trailing 2-0 early in the first half, Jimenez got Western on the scoreboard, scoring on a deflection of a penalty kick by the goalkeeper in the 23rd minute.

The Vikings tied the game at 2-2 in the 28th minute when Andrew Weishaar (Fr., Puyallup) teamed with Keith Ferris (Jr., Richland) on a pick and roll from the left side, Weishaar putting the ball into the upper right corner for his first collegiate goal.

Western opened up a 4-2 lead in the second half. Justin Moore (So., Port Orchard/South Kitsap) scored on a corner kick by Jimenez in the 50th minute, and Jin Dangvan (So., Vancouver/Mountain View) found the net in the 63rd minute, Gibson Bardsley (Sr., Fall City/Mount Si) getting credit for an assist.

But Cal State Stanislaus tied it up on goals by Edwardo Meza in the 67th minute and Victor Regalado in the 86th minute. Shad Tenbroeck assisted on both.

In overtime, Western came tantalizingly close to the game winner. A shot by Kellan Brown (Jr., Tacoma/Bellarmine Prep) in the 102md minute hit the post and rolled across the goalmouth. Then Weishaar knocked the ball across the goalmouth a second time.

"We started off a little slow, but the bench responded," said Western associate head coach Greg Brisbon. "Moore was our player of the game. He came in and scored a great goal."

Western entertains Humboldt State in its home opener Monday (2:30 p.m. noon) at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
