Dec. 12, 2011

Box Score

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Paul Jones (Jr., Federal Way) came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points as Western Washington University cruised past Quest University, 106-61, in a non-conference men's basketball contest Monday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings improved to 10-1 with their eighth consecutive victory. The 106 points was a season-high for WWU, which had five players score in double figures.

Quest, located in Squamish, B.C., fell to 1-10. Guard Jose Colorado led the Kermodes with a game-high 19 points, 17 of them in the second half. The win was No.497 for head coach Brad Jackson, who is in his 27th season at WWU. He is looking to become just the fifth men's collegiate coach in state of Washington history to reach that plateau.

The Vikings took control quickly, hitting six of their first nine shots to jump to a 13-2 lead less than five minutes into the game. WWU extended the lead to 31-13 with nine minutes left in the half and held a 52-23 advantage at halftime.

Guard Rico Wilkins (Jr., Dallas, TX/DeSoto) had 13 points and eight assists and forward Cameron Severson (Jr., Petersburg, AK), playing his first game of the season, also had 13 points for WWU which shot 56.1 percent (46-of-82) from the field. Forward Rory Blanche (Sr., Ashland, OR) had 12 points on 6-of-7 field-goal shooting, and center Chris Mitchell (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) added 11.

Quest's 61 points matched the fewest allowed by WWU this season. The Kermodes had 26 turnovers, 23 of them on Viking steals. Severson and guard John Allen (Jr., Brier/Mountlake Terrace) each had five steals.

WWU had a 45-23 advantage in rebounds with six players having five or more.

The Vikings next travel to Las Vegas, Nevada, to host the sixth annual Great Western Shootout at The Arena at South Point. They face No.13-ranked Rollins FL on Thursday (3 p.m.) and No.18 Alabama-Huntsville on Friday (3 p.m.)
