OLYMPIA, Wash. - Western Washington University's Kara Zitzman (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) is second in medalist play and the Vikings are tied for third in the team standings after Friday's opening round at the Saint Martin's University Women's Golf Invitational Tournament being held at the Olympia Golf and Country Club.

Saturday's second and final round begins at 9:30 a.m.

The Vikings shot 336 and are tied with Hawaii-Hilo for third in the 10-team field. Leading at 326 is Tarleton State, ranked No.8 in the latest Golf World/Women's Golf Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Coaches' Poll, with Victoria BC second at 335.

Zitzman shot a 6-over par 79 and trails Victoria's Megan Woodland by just two shots. Tied for third are Sunny Powers of Concordia OR and Jessica Pickwick of Tarleton State, who both shot 80.

WWU's Kristen Hansen (Fr., Spokane/Mead) shot 84 and is tied for 13th. Claire Rachor (Sr., Bellingham) is 19th (86), Anna Bourland (So., Bainbridge) tied for 20th (87) and Katya Case (Jr., Enumclaw) 29th (90).

"It was a tough day out there, but it was a tough day for everyone," said WWU assistant coach Luke Bennett. "The course is not that long, but the greens were extremely fast."
