Schramm, Waltrip lead Vikings past Saint Martin's, 83-50

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Kristin Schramm (Sr., Chelan) scored a game-high 22 points as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's University, 83-50, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings, who won their third straight game, improved to 15-5 overall and remained in second place in the GNAC at 9-3.

SMU fell to 7-16 overall and 2-11 in the GNAC. Emily Lashua and Jordyn Richardson each had 11 points for the Saints, who lost for the seventh straight time and the 11th time in the last 12 games.

WWU led by just four, 19-15, with eight minutes left in the first half, but ran off 11 straight points to take a 30-15 lead with 4:10 remaining and held a 37-24 advantage at halftime.

The Vikings then opened the second half by scoring 29 points in the first nine minutes, hitting 7-of-8 three-pointers in the run, to take a 68-32 lead.

Schramm, who scored 14 points in the second half, was 8-of-11 from the field, connecting on all five of her shots from beyond the arc.

Guard Corinn Waltrip (Jr., Tigard, OR) broke out of a shooting slump with 16 points, hitting 4-of-9 three-pointers, and forward Sydney Donaldson (Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) had 13 points off the bench.

WWU shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field, including 12-of-24 (50.0 percent) on three-pointers.

The Vikings had a 43-30 rebound advantage with Kayla Bernsen (Fr., Moses Lake) grabbing a game-high nine boards. Guard Trishi Williams (Jr., Mabton) handed out nine assists and Waltrip five.

WWU next travels to Alaska for GNAC counters at league-leading and nationally No.8-ranked Alaska Anchorage on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday (3 p.m.).
