LITCHFIELD, Ariz. - Western Washington University freshman Kristen Hansen (Spokane/Mead) had a strong finishing round for the second straight week and tied for 10th in medalist play with sophomore teammate Anna Bourland (Bainbridge) at the Grand Canyon Fall Invitational which ended Tuesday at the Wigwam Golf Course.
The Vikings placed eighth in the team standings, shooting 304 for a 36-hole total of 622.
Host Grand Canyon won the 17-team tourney by five strokes with a score of 603 (301). Tying for second at 608 were Oklahoma Christian (306) and Cal State San Marcos (300), which finished with the best round of the event.
"I felt like we played a lot better today," said WWU coach Bo Stephan (7th year), "but we need a lot more work before our last two fall events. One of the things we need to have are faster starts."
Hansen and Bourland each finished at 7-over par 151. Hansen shot 1-over 73 and Bourland 75.
WWU's Claire Rachor (Sr., Bellingham) tied for 30th at 157 (79), with Katya Case (Jr., Enumclaw) finishing tied for 57th at 164 (83) and Kara Zitzman (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) 63rd at 167 (82).
Tying for medalist honors at 2-under 142 were Anna Arrese Cortadellas (72) from Oklahoma Christian and Charlotte Jaengkit (68) from Oklahoma Christian.
WWU takes a week off before competing in the Saint Martin's Invitational on Oct. 5-6 at the Olympia Golf and Country Club.
