Vikings teaming up to fight cancer

Oct. 17, 2013

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Western Washington University Vikings work hard to win games--and they go the extra mile to support the behind-the-scenes warriors at the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center.

WWU Athletics annual game-day donation events--Dig Pink, Pink Zone and Coaches vs. Cancer--raised enough money on behalf of the Cancer Center to fund an infusion suite.

WWU volleyball and basketball coaches Diane Flick, Carmen Dolfo and Tony Dominguez, along with their players--including members of the 2011-2012 National Championship men's basketball team--recently presented the check at the Cancer Center.

"Most of us have been touched by cancer in some way," said Coach Flick. "We are privileged to be able to play a sport we love, so we dedicate our effort to those who cannot play, those who are fighting a tougher battle."

Flick compared her athletes to Cancer Center caregivers: "While we spend hours in practice and preparation, the public sees just the games we play.

And PeaceHealth caregivers do so much that is unseen,in order to provide a comfortable experience and a positive outcome."
