GRANBURY, Texas - Western Washington University's Claire Rachor (Sr., Bellingham) is tied for ninth in medalist play and the Vikings are seventh in a nine-team field after first-day play Monday at the Tarleton State University Doc Housewright Women's Golf Invitational being played at the Harbor Lakes Golf Club.
Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m.
WWU shot 327, finishing one stroke behind sixth-place Western New Mexico.
"It was tough out there today with the wind blowing a steady 20 miles per hour, but our team handled their emotions pretty well," said WWU assistant coach Luke Bennett.
Host and nationally No.4-ranked Tarleton State holds a five-stroke lead after shooting 307. No.3-rated St. Edward's is second at 312 and Texas A&M Commerce is third at 314.
WWU's Kristen Hansen (Fr., Spokane/Mead) shot 82, Kara Zitzman (Sr., Woodinville/Redmond) 83, Anna Bourland (So., Bainbridge) 84 and Emily Koryto (R-Fr., East Lansing, MI) 88.
St. Edward's Wallis Spears and Tarleton State's Jessica Pickwick are tied for the medalist lead, each shooting 1-over par 73.
This is WWU's last regular-season tournament prior to the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships Presented by Coeur d'Alene Resort on Apr. 22-23 at Coeur d'Alene, Id.
