12 Vikings earn GNAC FAR Scholar-Athlete Awards

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Twelve Western Washington University student-athletes were named recipients of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Faculty Athletics Representative's Scholar-Athletes award for 2012-13.

The award, which began last year, is presented annually and honors the most outstanding scholar-athletes at each of the GNAC's 10 universities. To qualify, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.85 (4.0 scale).

WWU student-athletes honored were EmilyBoerger (Jr., Marysville/Marysville-Pilchuck), volleyball, 3.89; Sydney Coffey (Sr., Boulder, CO/Niwot), track & Field, 3.86; Damien Fisher (Sr., Fife), basketball, 3.86; Ashton Griffen (Jr., Duvall/Cedarcrest), soccer, 3.89; Chip Jackson (Sr., Seattle/Shorewood), cross country and track & field, 3.89; Maddy Jalbert (Fr., Boulder, CO/Niwot), cross country, 3.97; Bailey Jones (Sr., Mukilteo/Kamiak), volleyball, 3.85; Yvette Kelp (Sr., Lakewood), rowing, 3.85; Miranda Lahman (Jr., Boulder, CO/Niwot), cross country and track & field, 3.85; Trevor Robinson (Jr., Seattle/Nathan Hale), cross country and track & field, 3.98; Mary Rogers (Sr., Spokane/Shadle Park), cross country and track & field, 3.88; and Brianna Rosen (Fr., Bend, OR/Mountain View) track & field, 3.89.

Brent Carbajal, who has been the FAR at WWU for the last seven years, left that post in June after being appointed as the school's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He was also the chair of the GNAC FAR committee. Taking over Carbajal's FAR duties at WWU is Bruce Larson.

A FAR is a member of the faculty at a NCAA member institution who has been designated to serve as a liaison between the institution and the athletic department. The FAR serves as a representative of the institution in conference and NCAA affairs.

The role of the FAR is "to ensure that the academic institution establishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics."
