Post-game Interview - Catherine Miles

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Catherine Miles (Jr., Anacortes) scored the game winner in the seventh minute of overtime as Western Washington University rallied to defeat Montana State University Billings, 2-1, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Robert S. Harrington Field on the WWU campus.

Miles tied the game in the 87th minute as WWU remained unbeaten at 11-0-2 overall and first in the GNAC standings at 7-0-2. The win also was the Vikings' 18th straight at home.

MSUB fell to 6-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play. The Yellowjackets, who are 1-2-1 in their last four outings games following a 5-1-1 start, took an early lead as reserve Alisa Sagdahl scored her fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 37th minute.

"Catherine (Miles) played great today, her goals were well deserved," said WWU coach Travis Connell (12th year, 152-61-22). "She was the hardest working player out there. That's what you need is someone doing something special out there and she did that for us today."

Miles tied the game with just over three minutes left in regulation, taking a free kick from Elise Aylward (So., Renton/Lindbergh) in full stride and heading it into the lower left corner.

The game winner came when Miles got past a defender and put a shot from 16 yards inside the near post. Katherine Miccile (Sr., Kent/Kentlake) and Jessica Bertucci (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome) were both credited with assists.

The goals gave Miles a team-high six for the season. She ranks eighth among Viking career leaders with 30.

WWU's 18-game home field winning streak dates back to the start of the 2013 season. The school record is 25, set from 1981 to 1986.

MSUB's goal was just the fourth against the Vikings this season, one of them being an own goal.

WWU had advantages of 14-6 in shots and 13-2 in corner kicks.

It was the fifth overtime game of the season for the Vikings, who host Northwest Nazarene University on Saturday, Oct. 18 (4 p.m.).
