BILLINGS, Mont. - Brianna Jones (Sr., Bonney Lake) scored on a loose ball after a corner kick in the 75th minute as Western Washington University prevailed 1-0 over Montana State University Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Yellowjacket Soccer Field.

WWU, rated No.22 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, remained unbeaten at 9-0-1 overall and atop the GNAC standings at 5-0-1.

MSUB, which had a four-game unbeaten string snapped, fell to 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference play. The Yellowjackets, who had an 8-3 shot advantage, have allowed just three goals in their last four games.

"This was an important win for us, and to go on the road and win a game like this, we're very happy about it," said WWU coach Travis Connell, who picked up his 150th win (150-61-21) in 12 years directing the Vikings.

Jones' goal, her third of the season, came from six yards out in the midst of a group of players following a corner kick by Emily Webster (Fr., Bellingham/Sehome). Jones' shot was WWU's first of the game.

"She's a senior and she's playing like it," Connell said of his All-America defender. "She's really good in those situations with scrambles in the box. She's athletic and has really good instincts."

The shutout was the Vikings' third straight and eighth overall. WWU has allowed just two goals this season, one of those an own goal.

In the ninth minute, WWU goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson), who had three saves, tipped a shot from the top of the box by MSUB's Dane Lubieniecki over the crossbar.

WWU has now allowed the Yellowjackets just one goal in their last seven meetings, winning six and tying one. The Vikings hold a 13-3-2 series advantage.

WWU has two more GNAC road games next week, traveling to Western Oregon on Thursday, Oct. 9 (3 p.m.), and to Saint Martin's on Saturday, Oct. 11 (3 p.m.).
