WWU falls 84-78 at Puerto Rico-Bagamon

Nov. 18, 2014

Box Score

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - It may have been 82 degrees, but Western Washington University had a cold shooting night in an 84-78 loss to University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Complejo Deportive UPRB.

The Vikings, ranked No.11 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, fell to 2-1 as they made just 17-of-32 free throws, 53.1 percent, and connected on just 5-of-20 3-pointers.

WWU led 46-40 at halftime, but fell behind by as many as 13 points, 76-63, in the second half.

"We had a lead at halftime," said WWU head coach Tony Dominguez. "In the second half, they got more physical and we got a bunch of free throws, but we missed some critical free throws."

"Our guys just didn't shoot well. If we had made our free throws and our shots, we hit just 25 percent on threes, we would have been fine. It's a very different environment here with half the court inside and the other half outside."

Jaamon Echols (Jr., Seattle/Rainier Beach) scored a game-high 22 points for WWU. Kyle Impero (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) had 17 points, Ricardo Maxwell (Jr. Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) 15 and Jeffrey Parker (So., Richmond, CA/Salesian) 12.

WWU had a 38-32 advantage in rebounds. Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills) tied for game-high honors with nine and blocked shots. Parker and Joey Schreiber (So., Renton/Eastside Catholic) each had six boards.

PR-Bayamon got a team-high 18 points from Jesus Marqeuz. Victor Caratini had 16 and Abdiel Mojica 15. Alexus Parrilla grabbed nine rebounds.

WWU turned the ball over 16 times to nine for PR-Bayamon.

The Vikings play Puerto Rico-Rio Piedros on Wednesday, Nov. 19 (7 p.m.).
