BAYAMON, Puerto Rico - Forward Jeffrey Parker (So., Richmond, CA/Salesian) scored a game-high 16 points and center Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills) had 14 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots as Western Washington University concluded its trip to Puerto Rico on Saturday, Nov. 22, by defeating American University, 85-68, in a men's basketball exhibition game at Complejo Deportive.
The Vikings, ranked No.11 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, also got 11 points each from guard Ricardo Maxwell (Jr. Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) and reserve post-player Blake Bowen (Jr., Vancouver/Skyview).
AUPR got 12 points apiece from Joseph Marrero and Christopher Rodriguez, and Jerome Romero added 11.
WWU trailed by eight points, 27-19, midway through the first half, but came back to tie the game at halftime, 35-35.
The Vikings opened the second half with a 14-5 run for a 49-40 lead and extended that to 20, 71-51, with 5:46 to play. Their biggest lead was 25 points, 85-60, with 1:44 left.
WWU held AUPR to 39.7 percent (25-of-63) field-goal shooting and had a 50-30 rebound advantage.
The Vikings play their next three games at home, beginning with a contest against Multnomah University on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m.
