WWU beats Thompson Rivers, 95-78

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Jeffrey Parker (So., Richmond, CA/Salesian) scored a career-high 30 points and guard Jaamon Echols (Jr., Seattle/Rainier Beach) added 29 as Western Washington University overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Thompson Rivers University, 95-78, on Monday, Dec. 15, in a non-conference men's basketball game at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings improved to 6-3 overall with the triumph, their 10th straight home victory. Parker had 23 points in the second half, Echols had 17 in the first half.

TRU, based in Kamloops, B.C., fell to 7-8 overall. Josh Wolfram and Reese Pribilsky each had 18 points for the Wolf Pack.

The Vikings trailed by as much as eight points in the opening half and were down, 41-35, at the half as the Wolf Pack closed the period with a 12-3 run. TRU hit 10 of its first 12 field goal attempts and shot 60 percent (18-of-30) from the field in the opening half, including 5-of-6 on 3-pointers.

WWU opened the second half with a 13-2 charge, taking a 48-43 lead with 16:42 to play. Center Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills), who finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks, had seven points in the run.

The Vikings never trailed again. TRU twice pulled to within one point, the final time at 57-56 on a Gerard Gore jumper with 12:03 to go. But WWU responded with 10 straight points and never led by less than seven after that.

Ricardo Maxwell (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Withrow) had 12 points and 12 assists for the Vikings, who shot 52.1 percent (37-of-71) from the field. TRU shot 58.6 percent (34-of-58).

Parker was 10-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-13 from 3-point range, and Echols made 12-of-22 field goals and was 4-of-9 from beyond the arc.

WWU has won 46 of its last 47 games at Carver Gym, the lone loss during that stretch being to Seattle Pacific, 76-60, on Jan. 15, 2014.

The Vikings travel to Las Vegas for South Point Holiday Hoops Classic games against Tarleton State University TX, ranked No.6-nationally in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, on Dec. 18, and Cal State San Bernardino on Dec. 19. Both have 3:30 p.m. tipoffs.
