TACOMA, Wash. - Western Washington University's Bethany Drake (So., Sandy, OR) had an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 156-11 in winning the women's javelin and Slater Hirst (Jr., Shoreline/Kings) had a provisional national qualifying throw of 194-7 in taking the men's javelin as the Vikings opened their season at the University of Puget Sound Quadrangular Track & Field meet on Saturday at Baker Field on the UPS campus.

The Viking men won with 63 points, 25 better than the host Loggers; and the WWU women, despite winning eight events, placed third with 41 points. Puget Sound took top honors with 75-2/3 and Lewis & Clark was third at 42-1/3.

WWU's Amber Dodd (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline) had a meet record 1:05.22 clocking in capturing the women's 400-meter hurdles.

The Vikings' Brandon Pless (Fr., Sedro-Woolley) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the men's shot put with a winning effort of 47-7 3/4. Jacob Gilbert (Sr., Bellingham/Sehome) was second (46-1 1/2) and Damien Fisher (Sr., Fife) third (46-1/2). Gilbert won the men's discus (137-1) and Pless was second (133-10).

WWU's Veronica Ivancic (So., Seattle/Nathan Hale) placed first in both the women's 100 (12.90) and 200 (26.28). Her twin sister, Rachel (So., Seattle/Nathan Hale), was second in the 100 (13.16) and third in the 200 (26.95).

The Vikings' Shandel Yanney (Sr., Ferndale) won the women's long jump (15-6) and placed second in triple jump (34-3/4).

Also winning events for WWU were Logan Giese (Fr., Spokane/Central Valley) in the men's 1,500 (4:01.09), Cory Johnson (So., Enumclaw) in the men's 10,000 (32:00.60), Elizabeth Knope So., Portland, Ore./Grant) in the women's pole vault (10-2), Maggie Roe (Sr., Bellevue/Newport) in the women's discus (119-8), and Shawna Troupe (Fr., Kelso) in the women's 800 (2:22.05).

WWU next competes in the Pacific Lutheran Invitational on Saturday, March 8, at Tacoma.
