Box Score
VANCOUVER, B.C. - Brianna Jones (Sr., Bonney Lake) scored in the 10th minute and anchored a defense that made that goal stand up as Western Washington University blanked University of British Columbia, 1-0, in a women's soccer exhibition game Friday evening at Thunderbird Park.
Jones, who was a first-team Daktronics All-American and the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, knocked in a bouncing ball off a cross by Delanee Nilles (Jr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap).
Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) and Miranda Head (R-Fr., Marysville/Lakewood) split time in goal for WWU. Hayden made two saves in the first half and Head had six saves in the second.
UBC had a 15-10 advantage in shots, but WWU had six corner kicks to the Thunderbirds' two.
The Vikings are ranked third nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 and are the favorite to take the Great Northwest Athletic Conference championship.
WWU meets two more Canadian schools in exhibitions. The Vikings are at Trinity Western on Wednesday, Aug. 27 (7 p.m.), and host Calgary on Aug. 30 (6 p.m.). WWU opens its regular season on Sept. 4 (7 p.m.) at home against Humboldt State.
