Post-game Interview - Anna DeWeirdt BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Reserve forward Anna DeWeirdt (So., Sammamish/Skyline) had a goal and an assist as nationally ranked Western Washington University defeated Notre Dame de Namur University, 2-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game Monday afternoon at Harrington Field on the WWU campus.
WWU, rated third in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, improved to 4-0-0 and have yet to allow a goal this season. The victory was the 14th straight at home for the Vikings.
NDNU, which fell to 2-2-0, got nine saves from goalkeeper Abigail Cebrero. She made five in holding WWU scoreless in the first half.
"We played better in the second half," said WWU coach Travis Connell (12th year, 145-61-20). "Anna DeWeirdt did a great job coming off the bench. She turned the game around for us."
DeWeirdt, a transfer from NCAA I New Hampshire, broke a scoreless tie 56 seconds into the second half, coming across the goalmouth for a tap-in on a cross from Lexi Klinkenberg (Fr., Renton/Kentridge). Also getting an assist on the play was Kim Cooper (Sr., Bellingham).
In the 63rd minute, Jessica Bertucci (Jr., Bellingham/Sehome) scored her team-leading third goal of the season, beating the goalie one-on-one on a one touch after receiving a long entry from DeWeirdt.
Goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) made six saves for the Vikings, who had a 29-14 shot advantage.
WWU opens Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday, Sept. 18 (4 p.m.) at Central Washington.
"We gave up too many shots, too many corner kicks and too many chances for my liking," Connell said. "We weren't as sharp as I want us to be defensively. We still got a result which is encouraging as we head into a big week of conference play."
