ELLENSBURG, Wash. - All-America defender Brianna Jones (Sr., Bonney Lake) had a goal and an assist as the nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team scored three times in the first 24 minutes to defeat Central Washington University, 3-0, in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools Thursday at the CWU Soccer Field.
WWU, rated sixth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25, improved to 5-0-0. The Vikings entered the game not having scored a goal in the first half this season.
Central fell to 1-4-0 overall.
"It makes it so much easier when you can get early goals," said WWU coach Travis Connell (12th year, 146-61-20). "It puts so much more pressure on the opponent and that's what happened today."
WWU's Anna DeWeirdt (So., Sammamish/Skyline) scored her second goal of the season in the third minute, taking a cross from Emily Webster (Fr., Bellingham/Sehome) and beating the goalie on the right side.
Catherine Miles (Jr., Anacortes) made it 2-0 with her team-leading fourth goal in the 17th minute, finding the lower left-hand corner of the net. Delanee Nilles (Jr., Poulsbo/North Kitsap) and Jones were credited with assists.
In the 24th minute, Jones scored on a header off a corner kick by Webster. It was Jones' first goal of the campaign.
WWU had a 17-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson), who had one save, and Miranda Head (R-Fr., Marysville/Lakewood) combined for the shutout.
WWU travels to Seattle Pacific University on Saturday, Sept. 20, for a GNAC counter.
