BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Defender Brianna Jones (Sr., Bonney Lake) headed in a corner kick for the lone goal of the game, lifting nationally ranked Western Washington University over Western Oregon University, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer contest on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Robert S. Harrington Field.
WWU's new campus facility was formally dedicated following the game.
WWU, rated No.15 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in GNAC play. The Vikings have now won 16 straight home games.
WOU fell to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in GNAC play.
Jones scored in the 24th minute off a corner from Emily Webster (Fr., Bellingham/Sehome). It was Jones second goal of the season and a team-leading third assist for Webster.
From there, the Viking defense took over.
WWU had a 16-8 advantage in shot attempts and goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) needed to make just two saves in earning her sixth shutout of the season.
"I was really pleased with how we defended," said WWU Coach Travis Connell. (12th year, 148-61-21). "Our defense frustrated a very good team and limited them to long-range shots. Our focus today was defending and we did a good job of that."
The Wolves' best chance came in the 74th minute, when Julie Belden's shot from 17 yards forced Haden to dive to her right to make a save.
WWU had a number of opportunities to get an insurance goal, the best coming in the 80th minute when WOU goalkeeper Amanda Rose Johnson, who had seven saves, tipped a volley from eight yards by Catherine Miles (Jr., Anacortes) over the crossbar.
WWU completes its three-game home stand on Thursday, Oct. 2 (7 p.m.) playing host to Simon Fraser in a GNAC counter.
