AZUSA, Calif. - Forward Catherine Miles (Jr., Anacortes) scored her second goal in as many games in the 57th minute as nationally ranked Western Washington University blanked Azusa Pacific University, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game Monday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex on the APU campus.
The Vikings, rated third in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25, improved to 2-0.
Miles scored from five yards after receiving a cross from Anna DeWeirdt (So., Sammamish/Skyline), a transfer from NCAA I New Hampshire.
APU, which fell to 0-3, has yet to score this season. The Cougars, who had a 16-8 shot advantage and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, had a chance from 12 yards in the final minute that just missed the outside post.
"This is a really good team that we played and we're really happy with the result," said WWU coach Travis Connell (12th year, 143-61-20). "They created plenty of chances to score, but we were able to defend ...
"We battled hard and I'm proud of our players. It's super important to learn how to win games when you're maybe not playing at your best and we were able to do that tonight."
WWU goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Jr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) made six saves in posting her second shutout. She had five in the first half when APU had an 8-3 advantage in shots.
Connell praised the play of defender Chelsea Jackson (Jr., Surrey, B.C./Fraser Heights Secondary) and DeWeirdt.
"Anna came off the bench and was fantastic for us in the second half, serving up the ball that Catherine scored on. Anna was a game changer for us tonight."
The Vikings, who opened their season with a 2-0 win at home over Humboldt State last Thursday, are at Cal Baptist on Wednesday, Sept. 10 (3 p.m.).
