Postgame Interview - Joey Schreiber

BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Forward Joey Schreiber (So., Renton/Eastside Catholic) scored a career-high 38 points to set a school record for most points scored off the bench, leading Western Washington University to an 88-68 triumph over Montana State University Billings on Thursday, Jan. 8, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings improved to 8-6 overall and 1-3 in the GNAC, snapping a two-game losing streak. WWU has won 12 straight games at home, including seven this season, and 48 of its last 49 at Carver Gym.

MSUB fell to 2-13 overall and 0-5 in the GNAC with its third straight loss. Forward Momir Gataric had 25 points for the Yellowjackets and guard Antoine Hosley added 17 off the bench. Gataric was 10-of-14 from the field and Hosley was 8-of-11, but the rest of the Yellowjackets combined were 10-of-39.

Schreiber, who also had 12 rebounds, entered the game four minutes into the contest and scored his first 17 points in leading a 20-8 charge that gave the Vikings a 31-20 lead with 5:28 left in the half. His eventual 38 points are tied for eighth in school history. He was 13-of-21 from the field, including 6-of-9 on 3-pointers, and made all six of his free-throw attempts.

Schreiber's effort off the bench eclipsed the previous best for points by a WWU reserve of 33 set by John Nance in a 133-63 triumph at Alaska Southeast on Jan. 28, 1990.

Jeffrey Parker (So., Richmond, CA/Salesian) had 17 points for the Vikings, Mac Johnson (Jr., Spokane/Gonzaga Prep) added a season-high 15 along with nine rebounds, and Anye Turner (Sr., Tumwater/Black Hills) had 11 points and five blocked shots.

WWU had 26 assists, with Harris Javier (Jr., Walnut, CA) getting 10 and Kyle Impero (Jr., Everson/Nooksack Valley) adding seven.

WWU held a 44-29 lead at halftime after shooting 52.9 percent (18-of-34) from the field, then opened the second half with a 15-5 run to take a 59-34 lead with 14:15 left. MSUB pulled to within 13 at 74-61 with four minutes left, but never got that close again.

The Vikings had a 48-25 advantage in rebounds. They also shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) on free throws after entering the game hitting just 62.1 percent at the line.

WWU is now 11-0 versus MSUB at Carver Gym and holds an 18-4 series advantage.
