SEATTLE, Wash. --- Caitlyn Jobanek (Jr., Springfield, OR/Thurston) scored in the 49th minute, as Western Washington University defeated Seattle Pacific University, 1-0, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's soccer battle of nationally ranked teams on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Interbay Stadium.

The Vikings, ranked No.5 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 8-1-0 overall and remained perfect in the GNAC at 4-0-0 with their sixth consecutive victory.

SPU fell to 5-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play.

The WWU goal came after a scramble in the goal mouth off a corner kick. Jobanek found the loose ball and knocked it in from eight yards out.

The Vikings had nearly scored moments earlier, as Catherine Miles (Sr., Anacortes) was stopped by SPU goalkeeper Molly Stinson after getting behind the Falcon defense.

"It was a good game between two really good teams," said Western coach Travis Connell. "SPU is a proud program and they had us on our back foot early. I was proud of how we slowly worked our way back into the game. We kept the ball much better in the second half and after we scored the goal, we were able to see the game out."

The Vikings had a 19-13 advantage in shot attempts, but the Falcons did have good chances, the best being in the first half, when Isabell Farrell hit the crossbar from 17 yards out in the 15th minute.

WWU goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Sr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) made five saves in earning her fifth solo shutout and the team's seventh clean sheet.

SPU has won the last two GNAC Tournament titles, winning both on shootouts over the Vikings, but WWU has captured the last three GNAC regular-season crowns.

The Vikings entertain Trinity Lutheran College in a non-conference game Saturday, Oct. 3 (4:30 p.m.).
