BELLINGHAM, Wash. ---- Forward Elise Aylward (Jr., Renton/Lindbergh) and midfielder Emily Webster (So., Bellingham/Sehome) each scored second-half goals, lifting the nationally ranked Western Washington University women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory Saturday over Montana State University-Billings in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest.
The Vikings, ranked No.3 in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll, improved to 11-1-0 overall, 6-0-0 in GNAC, with their ninth consecutive victory. MSU-Billings fell to 5-4-2 overall, 3-3-1 in the GNAC.
Aylward opened the scoring in the 48th minute with her sixth goal of the season. Gabriela Pelogi (Fr., Federal Way/Bonney Lake) drove a low cross in from the left and the ball deflected to Aylward, who tapped into the far post from six yards out.
Webster doubled the margin in the 72nd minute with a 25-yard free kick that hit the crossbar and went in.
"In the second half we were a lot more composed on the ball," said WWU coach Travis Connell. "We moved it on the ground more, and we found gaps in the defense that helped us create quality chances."
The Vikings had a 20-6 advantage in shot attempts, including a 12-2 gap in the second half. Goalkeeper Ashley Haden (Sr., Brush Prairie/Hockinson) made just two saves as WWU posted its eighth shutout.
"We've been spending time on restarts, and that paid off today," Connell said. "The first goal started with a throw-in, and the second was the great free kick by Emily Webster."
The Vikings visit Central Washington for a GNAC contest Thursday (3 p.m.).
