HURRICANE, Utah --- Western Washington University's Brooke Branigan (Jr., Bellingham) shot a 2-over-par 74 to help the Vikings sit in sixth place after opening-round action at the Dixie State University Women's Golf Invitational Tournament on Monday at Sand Hollow Golf Course.
WWU is eight shots off the lead after a 22-over-par 310 in a tightly bunched field where nine of the 13 schools are within 12 shots of top spot.
Branigan is tied for eighth in the medalist standings, three shots behind leader Alexis Hayes of Sonoma State. Point Loma Nazarene holds the team lead at 14-over 302, one shot ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay.
The early part of the round was played in sunny, warm conditions, but conditions deteriorated as the day went on, and play was briefly suspended because of a thunderstorm shortly after the Vikings finished their rounds.
"The wind picked up a lot while we played," said WWU Coach Bo Stephan. It's a hard course, you have to be smart, think a little bit. Overall, I'm not disappointed with our round."
WWU's Jenn Paul (So., Bellingham) is tied for 12th after shooting a 4-over 76. Audrey Orem (Jr., Bellingham) had a 78, Stephanie Sewell (Fr., Kent/Kentridge) 82, and Kristen Hansen (Sr., Spokane/Mead) 85.
The tournament concludes with second-round play Tuesday.
