HONOLULU, Hawai'i â€" Senior point guard Ricardo Maxwell scored 27 points and junior forward Jeffrey Parker had 25 points, but the Western Washington Vikings came up just short in an 82-76 loss to Hawai'i Pacific Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game as part of the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic at Moanalua High School.
The Vikings (5-3) trailed by 10 points at halftime (44-34) and by as many as 13 points, but pulled to within 2 points with 11-seconds remaining in the game (78-76). Hawai'i Pacific closed out the game scoring the final 6 points to secure the 82-76 victory for its third consecutive win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
Maxwell (Cincinnati, OH/Withrow/Edmonds CC) matched his season high in points scored with 27, shooting 11-for-19 (57.9%) from the field while playing all 40 minutes. He scored 15 of his 27 points in the first half.
Parker (Richmond, CA/Salesian) continued his early-season scoring binge pouring in 25 points, including six three-pointers. Parker heated up down the stretch 18 of his 25 points in the second half. In eight games this season Parker leads the Vikings averaging 20.1 points per game.
Senior guard Kyle Impero (Everson, WA/Nooksack Valley/Whatcom CC) narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and 8 points. Impero leads the Vikings averaging 7.0 rebounds per game.
The Vikings shot 47.4% from the field (27-for-57), but were held to 7-for-23 (30.4%) from three-point range.
Junior guard Connor Looney came off the bench for Hawai'i Pacific to score a team-high 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting. Senior forward Chauncey Orr (a transfer from Bowling Green) added 17 points and 5 rebounds, and senior forward Joel Feigler had 14 points to round out the Sharks top scorers. HPU was 8-for-16 from three-point range, a day after setting a program record with 20 treys against Grace Bible. The Sharks also converted 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.
The Vikings open Great Northwest Athletic Conference play Thursday (Dec. 3) vs. Saint Martin's at 7:30 pm at Whatcom Pavilion. WWU was selected as the preseason favorite in the GNAC by conference coaches.
