BELLINGHAM, Wash. â€" After a pair of Final Four appearances and another top 10 finish, Western Washington University ranked No. 3 in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup NCAA Division II standings following the Fall Championships season.
WWU earned 239.5 points, led by 83 points each by women's volleyball and women's soccer advancing to the NCAA II Final Four in their respective sports. Women's Cross Country contributed 73.5 points finishing 6th in the NCAA II Championships in Joplin, Mo., the best finish in program history.
The latest rankings were released Thursday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, marking the one-third point in the 2015-16 campaign. The annual rankings â€" which quantify the national success of all 307 NCAA Div. II programs â€" are updated after the Winter Championships season in April, and finalized following the last national competitions in June.
"It was a remarkable fall season and we are very proud of all of our student-athletes and coaches for this achievement," said Athletics Director Steve Card. "We look forward to our winter and spring sports adding to this fantastic start to the year."
Western trailed just Grand Valley State (378.0) and Colorado School of Mines (328.0) in the Division II standings, and led all of the 38 West Region teams at the Division II level.
In 2014-15, WWU placed 36th in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup national all-sports standings. The Vikings have had 12 consecutive Top 50 finishes and been among the Top 100 in each of its 17 seasons as a NCAA II member. They had seven consecutive Top 20 finishes from 2007 to 2014, placing 6th in 2009-10 and 7th in 2010-11 for the best final rankings in school history.
